WUPI Presque Isle NOT to UPGRADE to 1kW/88.7

I got to go into Presque Isle's only college radio station, WUPI 92.1, and I talked to one of the volunteer DJ's (a HUGE country fan....), but I found out that there upgrade to 88.7 with 1 kw (as opposed to 17 Watts) will not be happening anytime soon, thanks to other filers in the area (haha, what filers?), seems like this 88.3 in Madawaska has been given the green light.

But it really does look nice the studio, brand new equipment, over 3,600 songs in their rotation, and a resonable site:
http://www.umpi.maine.edu/~wupi/

Shame in a way about they upgrade, but they ARE streaming now. Check out their website for more info.

The WUPI calls were once licensed to Lynn, MA on 105.3 in the 60's IIRC. They were changed from WUPY for what reason I don't know. The stick was in Peabody where WMKK is now if my memory is correct. I have some old tapes of my grandfather interviewing different people on that station including a young Barbra Streisand.

Checked out the site. Interesting that they bill their site with a "dot-com" address. You'd think they'd like to stick to an .edu or .org or something else. Dot-com gives the implication that you are, in fact, a commercial entity which they are not.

But I can't say I'm surprised. The site is littered with typographical errors/misspellings. Egads, I hope they're not English profs! ;D :p

well it's off of the University's webiste, which is .edu, which is appropriate for a college

I know this post was probably useless to alot of people, since this station is so far north, where I live, but they have come a long wase, I wish they could have gotten the upgrade to 1kw, i BARELY get them 13+ miles away, and when I mean barely, even with the best amplifier/car radio it still very staticy. Good days it does come in better. They don't "sound" like a commerical station, they sound like your little station with one of those FM Transmitters you buy at Wal-Mart, but hey, at least they have a station, WUFK, the former College station way up in Fort Kent went dark a few years ago, also on 92.1. Sad.

Speaking of Univ. of Maine college stations....UM Machias has had a closed circuit station for years around the campus. A few times when driving by there over the years I could hear it "leak out" over the air putting a very spotty signal around Machias. And they came in on a weird frequency too, 90.6 as I recall.

They recently received approval from the FCC to upgrade to 91.7 at 100 watts. They even have a call sign now WUMM. I don't know if/when they are officially on the air. Last time I drove by the campus about a month ago, no new towers or antennas were spotted (and believe me, I am a tower/antenna geek). Yesterday I was in Jonesport, about 15 airmiles SW of Machias, and tuned to 91.7 but didn't hear anything. Will keep an eye on this station, it could be interesting.

I believe UMM is the only U Maine college (other than Augusta) not to have a FCC licensed station (U Maine Fort Kent had one, no idea if it's still around) and it's one of the handful of colleges in Maine that doesn't have a licensed FCC station on campus.

Ya, the Fort Kent station actually went dark a few years ago, according to FCC records. Sad, because there is no other local AMERICAN radio station within 50 miles at least. I think the area should have just 1 local station, idk what they would play, but to have just Maine Public and fuzzy Presque Isle FM's is kind of harsh, but it is french country up there, if you've ever been there, it's hard press for stations!

Wasn't there an AMer on 1340 in Fort Kent a few years back??? Was it a relayer of a Caribou station???

there was........a sister station to a 1230 in madawaska that also went silent as the same time as 1340, no idea what they carried

the only american stations that far up in "the county" i can think of are public radio on 106.5 (fort kent), Channel X on 103.1/98.1/102.3 (fort kent, van buren, madawaska), canada must have a few up there out of grand falls or rimshotters from down the saint john river

yup, your right, that's it, Channel X or public. Imagine if you only had that to look forward to. Grand Falls has a hot ac station K93 that's pretty well to get there, more madawaska than fort kent, but that's about it that's english.
