WVJS Now Oldies-End of Timeless Favorites

WSON sounds pretty good too. It seems like the Oldies Radio playlist has changed to be "softer". Not sure if that's because of a new program director following the layoffs at Citadel late last year, or if it is because of the demise of Timeless.

Sunday morning I was out driving and tuned WSON. They run a show with hymns produced by the LDS and KSL Salt Lake City. It sounded really good. Almost as good as WNIN-FM. I wasn't able to tell if they had resolved the right channel being hotter than the left. (I'm not certain if my car radio has C-QUAM in it or not).

The right channel is still hot. If you have an AM stereo radio, chances are "ST", or some variation, will display. As far as Oldies Radio being softer, hardly. I've heard "All Right Now" by Free twice in 48 hours along with other loud screamin' guitar favorites on WSON.

Passing through the WVJS listening area Friday, it sounded good...the AM audio was loud, clean & consistent and the satellite integration with the liners, etc was smooth...station is a credit to the AM dial.

May I intrude on this WVJS discussion? I'm an AM DXer from Scotland UK, and have been puzzled by a station I heard on 1420 AM this morning (0700 UTC). After listening over and over again to my recording I am wondering if it is WVJS. However the location given by the woman in the id isn't Owensboro, but actually seems to be two locations.

Since I've clearly found a group of people who know about WVJS I wonder if your would listen to this clip (the id is repeated a few times) and let me know if this is WVJS. If it is, what are the locations mentioned. I'm interested to know if it isn't WVJS since I can then look elsewhere!!

Thanks for listening. It has now been identified for me as "1420 AM WDJA Daytona Beach, Boca Raton". Whilst investigating the call I note that WVJS has been heard occasionally in Northern Europe - Finland for example.

I'll keep listening out for this one although the principal North American stations I hear on the frequency are WHK WOC and KTOE. Paul

Years ago, I did a search for "WVJS" and found a few reception reports from Europe. Ironically, the night pattern is nulled that direction to protect WHK.

There's no 1420 in Daytona Beach. There's a 1450 WMFJ and there's a 1420 in St. Augustine. Don't know about Boca Raton. It doesn't surprise me about those stations being picked up overseas, though. Check out Radio Locator. They might not boom inland because of the poor ground conductivity, but they sure blast out to sea.

You should hear it on a wideband tuner.

Prior to becoming a ghost ship on the AM dial, WVJS had even more amazing audio especially in stereo. Through the air monitors they sounded a tad better than their former sister FM, WSTO. WVJS was actually an AM stereo test station in the mid seventies.

The processing today is mostly an Optimod 2200. The signal is processed for the translator (100.5). The FM mod monitor feeds an Optimod 9100 with its compressor gated so only the limiter/NRSC portion is active.

I will throw in my two cents...our engineer Ed Thomas does a great job of keeping WVJS sounding great, and I am appreciative that people notice it. I also have fond memories of a stereo "Oldies 1420 WVJS" as I worked there at the start of my career. When we put on the "Kool Gold" format, I was instantly impressed with their LIVE delivery (yup, on Dial Global even) and how it fits WVJS. My former colleague is right about how we get it to the air, and I have been impressed with how it jumps out of the radio in wideband. Whatever other companies have done to it in the past, this is one station we're not going to let fester by the roadside. Thanks for the kind words!
