I had desperately tried to make out hope of getting WLW 700 Cincinnati but it was too faint for me to make out anything. And that's on top of everything else I've gotten (including those mentioned a few threads back).

WWL was almost hard to make out at times but I did hear enough of it clearly to make out mentions of “The French Quarter” and “Louisiana” and that WWL is the flagship station of the New Orleans Saints Radio Network. Under normal daytime circumstances, 870 would be coming albeit faintly from about 100-some km north of here - CFSX Stephenville.

Between here and The Big Easy, that's a distance of 2043.995 miles, or 3289.491. Going in a southwest direction from here. It's the southernmost station I have ever picked up, beating out 93.7 Bob FM (as it was in 2009) from North Carolina, and WBT AM 1110 also in North Carolina.

Still haven't had any success with European stations yet. I did catch upon Allen's previous post about WGY (no luck on BBC Scotland or KGO San Francisco for me... yet).

Having gotten so much on the AMs after dark this week, I'm gonna take a break. I was surprised that WWL became my official 30th blowtorch catch since I started keeping track of them the last 5 years, but formally maintaining a hard copy of the log since late last month.

You 'should' be able to get

680 WRKO Boston 50,000
850 WEEI Boston 50,000
1510 WUFC Boston 50,000

I have heard all 3 of them in St John's

Got all those.

Have you tried longwave? 252 Ireland and 198 United Kingdom should be audible, with a few French, German to go for if you fancy a challenge.

EDIT: but be quick. Longwave transmitters are being switched off a pace as Europe slowly migrates to digital.

WWL would certainly be tough from NL, as they choose to use a directional signal mostly E/W from the Big Easy, so the signal won't be wasted over water (the Gulf of Mexico).

@BMR: From Florida, I never caught *one* Euro LW, and it looks as if I never will catch one. Currently I have no LW rx.

Florida to Europe is nearly twice the distance of Newfoundland to Europe, though.

(remember a flat paper map is a very bad way to assess distance on a large scale due to the curvature of the earth- use a globe or a website like mapcrow)

True, but Euro LW has been heard near Denver (which amazes me) and places near Chicago & Detroit. To be frank, I never had the right antenna....I did have a Yaesu FRG 7700 once, which gave up the ghost....I feel that I never really used it to its full potential.
