WWZN has Officially shifted away from Sports

I find it interesting that WWZN is now "Revolution Boston".

Some apparent changes have come to the station, they also now simulcast the WCVB evening newscasts.

Check out their new website at http://www.revolutionboston.com/ and see for youself

ahaha we'll see if this lasts

"revolutionBoston fills a void in the Boston media landscape and is the NEW VOICE for progressive ideas that make a difference in people’s lives."

That site's been up for a while now, as they were only carrying Sporting News on nights and weekends until the Hub took it.

And their sched isn't updated yet, as WCVB will have the 6a and 5p hours.

The Revolution Boston site was launched several months ago by Jeff Santos who was/is buying time on WWZN. They still do have 1510thezone.com which does mention the prog talk shows but also mentions various other sports-related play by play and perhaps some sports talk shows which are brokered time. AFAIK the official station site is still
http://www.1510thezone.com while Santos has Rev Boston for the progtalk he's buying

I think "Revolution Boston" is a terrible name for a station... makes it sound like a pirate station. And most people in America feel they are not in need of a "revolution" (excepting an overall mild desire to change the way health care is done here).

"revolution" sounds a lot like "renegade". "Renegade Radio" has been used by a similar-to-1510-station in the Providence market. Get my drift?

So, anyone have a better name for progressive talk? ("Progressive" sux too).

Only as long as those checks keep clearing......LOL.

Bob Kraft suing them in 3...2... :)

Revolution may be suitable because we think of the American Revolution and the colonial fight for freedom from England.

"Progressive" has been used as a substitute for 'liberal' which has fallen into disfavor. Actually I would think left leaning talk would want to try and appeal to listeners of all political stripes so progressive or liberal pigeonholes them only into the Left and words like revolution or freedom, etc might be more inclusive. Unless they want to only have the left listening...note that in many cases you will not hear mostly right-leaning stations saying "Conservative Talk" (1150 did but where are they now, eh?)

It's Talk (Frequency)...The Talk Station... Boston's Talk Evolution... You won't hear WRKO say "the best in right wing talk!"

ironically enough though remember how WBPS 890 was the Boston Talk Party? Given the recent tea party protests that nickname might come in handy now, esp. tying them into that DEC 1733 event right here...

Why would left-leaning radio want to appeal to the right? Does Howie Carr try to appeal to the left? How about Savage? Hannity? Coulter? Right-leaning radio became successful by appealing to right-leaning listeners. The challenge for left-leaning radio is not so much to appeal to left-leaning listeners as to bring left-leaning listeners BACK to AM radio. You don't do that by saying that maybe the Public Option has a provision for killing grandma.

As a listener to WWZN during the day I don't care much for the "Revolution Boston" name.

not everyone who listens to Rush etc is a right winger. It's actually interesting to hear the likes of Hannity or Howie debate those on the left (or at least make fun of them). I was listening to a tape of a Jerry Williams tribute show from WRKO aired right after his death...Pat Whitley had people like Avi Nelson, Gene Burns, Barbara Anderson, Bill Smith etc on and they said it was great when people wanted to tune in even when they didn't agree...people can tune in even though they may disagree with the host (look at "Josh from Vermont", a Howie regular)

The key obviously is to make it entertaining. I don't agree with Ingraham or Hendrie on every single issue but they make it interesting. Do we want an echo chamber of listeners/callers?

Sean, I agree with you.
Sean, you're right on target.
Sean, you're absolutely right.

And then:
Sean, are you out of your mind? this health care plan WILL work and let me tell you why...

Oh wait, let's just confine conservative talk to nothing but conservative listeners/callers...yeah, Hannity will come back with "let me set you straight, Mr Liberal" and maybe poke fun at him...but I'd think talk radio would want callers of every political stripe. (Am reminded of the fact that Avi Nelson, a conservative, did a show for years in a very liberal town. When he fills in for Howie he gets more than a few opposing calls. Because he does it in an entertaining and hopefully enlightening way.

True enough Bob. BUT...remember...the folks in Providence who were milking the concept and image of "renegade" were not renegades at all.

Actually...the word would be more like REPROBATE......LOL...LOL...LOL.

The days of Gene Burns etc are LONG behind us. Bring back responsible talk, and yes, everyone can and will participate. Have nothing but fear-mongers making fun of people who TRY to set the record straight, and it's just a waste of time.

Yeah...let's get ride of those fear mongers who make fun of people....let's get Keith Olberman, Rhandi Rhodes or Al Franken....or another straight shooter who does serious talk for people who want to be informed.

Here's what the http://ltradio.blogspot.com liberal talkradio blog had to say when a Portland, OR station dumped Stephanie Miller, its only liberal host: "The new station has the ridiculous moniker “Freedom 970”, yet it relies primarily on piped-in right-wing squawkers who like to brainwash people. Black is white, right is left."

Uh huh.

Washington, DC conservatalker WTNT/570 (owned by Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder) also uses the "Freedom 570" moniker. Virtually the entire lineup is fed from Talk Radio Networks, with Ed Schultz its' lone contrary voice (as it was the only bright spot on a sister stations' former liberal talk format). WTNT can't even break into the Top 40... of stations in the PPM rankings.

True but they're in a city full of government employees, one that votes overwhelmingly Democratic

Yep. I still find it amusing tho.

And during the election season, it was branded "McCain 570" - and its' former liberal talk sister station WWRC was dubbed "Obama 1260" (WWRC flipped this February to the Buisness Talk Network as "Money 1260").

Official, even tho it took forever to remove the parquet floor from the site's background, owing to WWZN's stint as Celtics flagship).

They also still list Peter Collins and the Young Guns on their schedule (even though both have been off the station for months) and spelled a certain Ralph Gordon's name as "Brother Stiars" for the longest time... now it's "Brother Stairs."

Plus there's tons of outdated SNR links that no one would know or care about to purge.

Does anyone know if that means that Harvard Football will no longer be carried on the Zone?

I was glancing at the sports on the air feature in today's Herald and I think it mentioned some weekend sports
events (college?) will still be on WWZN

Harvard Football with Bernie Corbett will now be on 1120 and 1390(?) in Plymouth plus a station in Southbridge. The Zone now carries Notre Dame Football...
