WXIX-TV Expanding Local News To Fill 'Judge Judy' 3 p.m. Slot This Fall

One has to ask how many blocks devoted to local news becomes too much, especially on slow news days as that can be a lot to fill. While I tend to watch more national news and read my local news online, the last time I paid much attention, there was local news at 6 a.m., Noon, 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. and sometimes it was the same regurgitated stuff on all 4 newscasts, sometimes repeated even a day or two later. Then they decided to add a 5 p.m. statewide newscast which is done in conjunction with a few other stations in the state where they show various content from all.

Regarding the story in the original post above, what does Judge Judy have to be so angry about? She's 78 years old, has worked her whole life, had national fame for the past few dozen years AND got her contract bought out for $99 Million. While one could tell from the few times I watched her show that she most likely isn't a pleasant person to deal with and one doesn't want to get on her bad side, I really don't see how she has much to be unhappy about.

I suspect it has less to do about filling time on slow news days and more about what fills the revenue bucket. I'm with you on your point though...that's a lot of time to fill with local news.

One other thing about Cincinnati that I don’t think was mentioned in this article… It has three stations already carrying 4:00 news,(WXIX being one of them). That’s a lot of 4:00 news for a market this size.

I’m really wondering what WLWT, which carries Ellen and is the only “Big 4” affiliate in town not running 4:00 news, will do—whether they’ll try another talk show, or try to get a piece of the 4:00 news pie. Another station (WCPO) carries Kelly Clarkson, so that may not be an option. Also, WLWT news ratings at 5, 6 & 11 have been pretty competitive in recent years, so adding a 4:00 newscast might look awfully tempting.
