WXK35 NOAA Weather Radio on 1640 am Waco area!!??

Yesterday afternoon I decided to flip through the entire AM band using the Pioneer radio in a GMC Pickup, well, on 1640 AM faint but clear I heard " you are listening to NOAA all hazard radio, the voice of the National weather service, station WXK35, serving the Waco listening area............"

So whats up with that  ? wikipedia says that WXK35 is located in Waco and broadcasts on 162.475 mhz with 500 watts.

I live about 20 miles west of Waco.

I thought I might be picking up the weather band somehow, but my radio works great and I was hearing WTAW College Station on 1620 AM and KKGM Fort Worth on 1630 AM.

My best guess is that someone has a weather radio receiver hooked up to a low power AM transmitter?

So am I alone in this or is any one else hearing it.?

Thoughts?

This is nothing new....it's been a complaint of mine (I live near Miami)---sometimes a TIS station won't have anything to broadcast, so they go with NOAA weather radio.

Whether NOAA knows about it or not, that's another story.

I think we had a TIS (travelers' information station) on 1670, maybe the one in Miami Beach, broadcasting NOAA, mentioning the NOAA frequency, and of course NOT "also on 1670 kHz AM" like I think it should be.

I don't like it, but IIRC someone on this board told me that it happens.

For years, Amarillo has had a TIS on 1610 kHz that rebroadcasts the local NOAA WX radio station. It is operated by TXDOT.

Any station has permission to rebrpadcast any NOAA Weather Radio Station, no permission required. Certainly slipping in the top of hour ID is needed.

Commercials stations have even used NOAA Weather Radio to 'fill' in ownership changes and to fire up a silent station to keep the license alive.

I understand lots of TIS styled stations operated by cities and towns run NOAA when there is no emergency. I think there are 2 or 3 in the Houston area. Pretty much if there is no 'shelter in place' due to some issue at the many plants around, NOAA fills the void.

The closest listing for a TIS station on 1640 in the area is in Temple. WPUJ590 is actually licensed on two frequencies: 1650 at 3620 Range Road (near the intersection of the North Loop at I-35) and on 1640 at the Temple Lions Park (on the southwest side of town). Offhand I'd doubt that 1650 is in use due to it being first adjacent to KRZI 1660 in Waco.

Personally I like having NOAA weather radio on the AM band. There's a TIS near me that does it and I always tune in while driving in bad weather.
