Gary Walker, WXXI Vice President for Television was named as the new director of communications for the City of Rochester by Mayor-Elect Robert Duffy.

Walker started his career in broadcasting in the southern tier of New York State. He came to Rochester to work at WVOR radio as a news reporter. Walker left commercial radio for public broadcasting when he was hired at WXXI.

In mid 1980s Walker left WXXI radio to work for Monroe County as the deputy director of communications under the Tom Frey administration. After Frey was defeated for re-election, Walker returned to WXXI where he rose through the ranks from TV anchor to become vice president of Television.

On a personal note I’ve know Gary for a number of years and he’s a decent person. I wish him the best of luck in his new job.

Yes he will be leaving. As for his replacement, that decision will have to be made by the management at WXXI.
