WYCT goes HD. Something new coming soon to Pensacola?

Poledo/Seedless/King of Strobey Signals = I am not sure who owns what rights to put all these FM dial destroying tadpoles all over the coast, but I have to ask the ultimate question. IF virtually no one can sell enough ads to pay for the real signals to be successful, who or why would any broadcaster spend the time and money to put these signals on in a way over radioed market? There are literally now two signals on every frequency from Mobile to Panama City. NYC doesn't boast such an array of stations.... I guess Hale is the only success story of 2018! Who would have thunked….

Now Tibbs, you know darn well that the last thing locals on the Emerald Coast want to hear is a comparison to NYC.

As for 2018... I wonder if Hale's main source of revenue was the "non-compliant" 97.1 translator in Pensacola. I'd also be interested in knowing how much of a loss 50kw WTKP took in PCB.

Looking forward, it'll be interesting to see if Pensacola's ADX can thrive in 2019. Those Pensacola tadpoles really do cover most of the population south of Hwy 90. Maybe not Perdido Key and Navarre so much, but the stations are there if you really want to listen.

The bad thing about translators is they crowd up the dial and can't cover medium sized cities or larger all that well. The good thing about translators is they seem to be a (relatively) affordable way for companies to get extra signals on the air, and they can sell the ads for cheep and not take a huge loss due to costs. Or, I guess, sell them as a bundle with the big gun signals for a comprehensive package covering multiple demographics. I honestly don't know how ads work on radio!

ADX was granted the move to the WDWR tower with 250 watts for 94.5. I have to wonder if they will move WNRP there and do something else with 92.3, or if 94.5 is being reserved for something else. WEBY, or a new format all together. Those HD2/3 channels are just sitting there, doing nothing on WYCT. *wink, wink*

Speaking of Hale, I noticed that ADX filed an informal objection to an application Hale filed in FWB for a translator on 94.3. Hale wants to move to 98.3. Which is not allowed by the rules for minor modifications. Oops. You'd think a seasoned broadcaster like Omni would know better.

But then, I noticed something even worse in Mobile; WERM filed a app to make the 1220 signal permanent to Mobile, where it's been transmitting for ages on a strung-out STA. But in the filing, they included data and graphics for 1550 in Bolton, Mississippi instead. That's a signal they're trying to move from 1540 in Greenwood down to Bolton, in the Jackson market. And that filing was all akimbo as well.

Fun times.

As I understand the translator rules, 99.1 is married to WEBY.
94.5 and 95.3 will be the translators hosted by 98.7 HD channels.
92.3 already has better in car coverage than 1620, so adding a second translator for WNRP in the Cantonment or Milton areas may be seen as a waste.
I still can't figure out why the new News Radio 92.3 billboards have the HD Radio logo on them.

And what is Hale planning for that second translator he bought in FWB? 103.7? Get a HD transmitter for WTKE 100.3 and program classic rock on a translator? Is WTKP back on the air?

Does anyone know of reliable sources that list which radio stations will carry the 2018-2019 Bama, Auburn, FSU and Florida football seasons? In the past I've never been able to find up to date listings.

I noticed this when I visited the area. Starting out with one show. They were using the NBC Sunday Night Football theme during the one local show they had so they could be running the NBC Sports Radio network soon. ESPN Radio is available, or does Mr. Hoxeng think they're too liberal?

94.5 is already airing content? Every time I've checked, it's the loop of that one annoying song.

I was in P'Cola last week. I heard dead air on 98.7 HD2 on Friday. Then Sunday night, the loop of "Get Ready For This" with the format tease was airing on both the HD2 and 94.5. They had a live midday show on Monday, then they went back to stunting loop. Kind of like a "soft launch," if you want to call it that.

Maybe they're waiting for the satellite receiver for NBC Sports Radio. That might be why they go back to the loop.

Yeah, Eric's right. 94.5 is running the annoying "Ready for this" song along with station ID's, top and bottom of the hour sports news and the lunchtime "Sports Drive?" local sports talk show. Been doing that since the second day on air.

Cat County was promoting a big announcement for today. It turned out to have nothing to do with Sports 94.5 at all, daytime DJ, Jenna Scott, was chosen to be a contestant on Who Wants to be a Millionare.

Before I saw this thread's updates I did stumble on that one hour (!) midday show on the HD2/94.5 combo. Eric, you may well be right about the satellite receiver thing, because launching like this with just one hour of programming is certainly odd. Frankly, the little bit I heard of the show it sounded like a complete mess, so maybe it's for the best that few know about it.

It looks like 94.5/98.7 HD2 will supplement their local programming with ESPN Radio. http://www.sports945.com

I don’t know what the Hoxengs are going to do about the multiple simulcasts of WNRP on HD3 and HD4.

ADX bought WEBY and 99.1. I expected sports to go to WEBY so I'm unsure what they'll do with it now. It really doesn't make sense for ADX to have 2 news/talk stations in Pensacola.

WEBY is on 99.1 today. Sounds like they’re using a string and two tin cans to feed the audio to the translator.
