WYNG to drop ESPN Radio Monday, ESPN moves to WYFX

BigTimeEngineer said:
Skipper says: MAJOR difference in the reception for 94.9

Hey, Skip, did your science teacher at Reitz High School ever explain the theory regarding sound waves? "...When a tree falls in the forest and there's no one to hear it..." I believe the same can be said for 94.9 in Mt. Carmel.

Don't we have something more interesting to discuss than Withers peeing in the wind?

How's WYFX sounding?

I think it was my dad who taught science out of college (at Mizzou)....And it was all about trees in the Mark Twain National Forest in The Ozarks.... I think I had Mr. Lyons at Reitz... He was good at talking about chickens, cockroaches and jumping box cars in the Howell (L&N) Switchyards....I think it was his favorite childhood memory...

On 106.7.... They sure have holes and I wonder if Dan and his group have Mark and the TOC group on board to do what they can to get the signal up to snuff????? Major static problems across Red Bank ridge that put nulls towards Elberfeld and of course get anywhere close to the South Central tower on the east of that ridge... Henderson and the East Side seem fine in the autos.... Best of luck.. Such a niche audience that they might be able to hold off for a while, pending any possible improvements.... If TOC would allow a low pass on 106.5 (which would not cause the Washington FM any problems), it could help some in lower and middle Gibson County.... I guess time will tell???

there is no new equipment, then tell me how the ENG's at (WYNG) pulled it off...

Sounds more like it's over modulating. As I recall, that was S.O.P. for Evansville. We use to run a monitor on a couple of those corporately owned Class As down there and they'd peg the meter.

...Scott to be heading this up.. Go get them, as best you can....
No truer words have been spoken.

BTE..

Yep...I really am glad that Scott gets the gig as GM.... He has been nothing short of the Voice of Mt.Carmel from his early days (when I was leaving Mt.Carmel for Carbondale).. He is dedicated to his community, friends, church and career... He is a joy to hear doing basketball on 100.5 and I can't wait to treat him to a lunch to celebrate his well deserved position... As a Mt.Carmelian by birth and from my days in radio there, I am proud that Localism will have a voice in Scott for Russ' station...

"Skip"

He is dedicated to his friends? Perhaps you need to spend some more time in your hometown.

"...from my days in radio there..."

And you worked where, and when, there?

::) ...."dedicated to his friends....." Oh wait, I think Skip was serious. Sorry.

Let's not forget, he was the original GM of 100.5 and had his shot at "running the show". How'd that work out for him??

Hummmm???? Sounds a little sour... However, I will take the high road...

Attended WVC in the Rick Ammon era (77'-79') and worked at the College FM in its heyday... Found memories of the folks in MC... Born in the old hospital in '58 when Dad was pastoring a small church and teaching at Oakland City College (University)... Had fun with Dave Hurlbut and Mike Dunkel drinking a beer or two and eating hot dogs cooked over the campfire at Dunkel's farm near Friendsville...
Did some work for Steve Fox at the old Pier 312 and served quarter beers and dollar sunrises on Monday nights....

Lived in a house apartment and had a roommate from Clay City that is now a State Trooper... It was a grand two years that led me on to 'CIL-FM in Carbondale from 79'-82'...

"Skip"

Sounds a little sour...high road....well played, Ah, nope.

The question was if when and where you WORKED in MtC. The question wasn't "did you ever meet Dave Hurlbut". Nor did I inquire about you place of birth or where you attended junior college. Or, by the way, your description of the college station's "hey days" could just as easily be construed as a condemnation (or to use your term, sounds a bet sour), of today's WVMC. I know that wasn't your intent. However, I am quite confident that if you said that to communications student attending Wabash Valley, he or she would be truly offended.

Skip, you've been around radio long enough to know the difference between the public personna and the real person. A case in point...

Radio Rob mentioned Buddy Scott and the WGBF airstaff in a posting recently. On the air, Buddy was a one of the best, if not the best, screamin', hyper-kinetic disc jockeys of that era. Off the air, the true Buddy was one of the nicest people in the world, and, notably, he was/is soft spoken, and quite shy.

Radio stations are a carefully programmed and formatted business, and that certainly goes for the everyone in the building that has any contact with the public, be it on the air or in a sales department.

Skip, as a student of the industry, you may recall the then morning person at WGBF; I won't use his name. On the air and in public, he was everybody's "pa-pa-pa-PAL". In so-called real life, the guy was a complete pr-ck. (Rob will remember the name, too.)

My point was that by your own statement about Scott McCallen, it was clear that you had never worked with him...much less know him. "Never just a book by its cover". That's good advice. It can also be said that you should never give a review of a book that you've never read.

Wackamole's comment, while a bit coarse, is more to the point.

Respectfully, you've accomplished what? Hiding behind a screen name with pot shots, innuendo and gossip.

Right. You're the expert on what is and what isn't the high road.

Enough of my wasting my time.

BTE... Sorry to get into anybody's crawl... I've known Scott since returning from Columbus and Nashville and I can only relate my contact with him... You would know much better in the working situation, as My contact was through sports and other semi-related media stuff... On WVC students now... I am only stating a 'sunglasses' viewpoint.. I received a great education there under a guy I really learned alot from.. I am concerned in the RT training of this era... With the business much different in this day and age, I have an opinion that might trigger a negative response.. So be it... Just as I can say we were not TV savy in those days... We were pretty much radio, to our disadvantage... Very little contact is made, in either direction, from WVC RT grads and grads to the RT program... I wish more could be done to boost that relationship...
Any way we look at it, I hope all the best for all of you, no matter what your position on radio might be...
On the Hurlbut and such.. Hey? Can't we remember growing up and being real... We all have changed greatly from those days (good or bad)... I will always have a found heart for a great little community on the Wabash.... If we can't share our lives and memories, than we become walking dead men....

??? Have you heard WYNG lately - It is a trainwreck of programming. I don't think that anybody has thought through what they are doing. Female Programming with adult contemporary (thats what they call it anyway) with Cardinal Baseball, Colt Football and then bad country on Saturday morning with the almighty RB. Who are they kidding - and to top it off - a really, really bad closing market report for both stockholders and farmers. Honestly - who would listen to this all over the place programming nightmare. The only thing I can think is that Withers lives too far away to hear how bad it is.
The funny thing is that the last book had the old ESPN 94.9 at, I think, a 3.3. They can kiss that goodbye. What is going on in Mt. Carmel. I thought Withers was smarter than this. But, I've been proven wrong by him before.
Wonder who's going to be the next GM because it won't be long until heads will roll there.

Did you hear their afternoon girl today? The one break I suffered through, she started by giving the wrong frequency (95.9)...then stumbled through a liner asking people to send in birthdays and then gave the wrong email addy twice.

Word is she's a former Hooter's waitress, so I'm sure she was hired for her "assets", not her broadcasting abilities. Apparently Withers Broadchasing is still going strong!! ::)

What's the over/under on when he either dumps the GM or dumps the station totally (along with about 20 other of his properties)?

I'll take June 1st on dumping management. And, that might be giving Withers the benefit of the doubt given his past patience with under-performing operations.

Not a Hooters waitress. Exotic She supposedly, rumor mill.

Is she cute or is this just she j envy?

Where else to get your start than Mt Carmel?

At least it is live which I think is the game plan.

No satellite. Except for brownfield. Keep up the great job on those pig bellies.

The 20 minute + morning news block featuring the general manager/news director/mid-day jock/sports director, CNN news with a business update and farm report is right out of 1965 M.O.R. Well, except the original WSAB sounded better than this experiment.

We should all hire our afternoon personalities from the She Lounge or Hooters. They may not be any good on the air, but a pole and the spotlights would certainly brighten up the staff breakroom.

As for Mt. Carmel being the place to start a career, "Professor Scot" left (P.C.) the local college a semester or two ago, maybe he thinks that he's still teaching, and that WYNG is actually WVJC.

Skipper better start making those airchecks for his collection. This can't last.

June 1st? Maybe. The staff's fortune cookie seems to read (not P.C.), "Withers' wyng's weel wong...wun away".

If WYNG is sounding that bad, then I say let's LMA to those folks at WEOA. It's still not too late for a Urban Hip Hop/R&B without Ryan Seacrest,s AT 40 gossip about American Idol.

Quality or not... The plan sounds like going local and area sales first and then add the outer rim, as they go along... I guess the budget is small, as liners are in house... Need imaging from a non-air / outside person(s)... Musically, it's not all that bad.. Could go either way.. Just an observation..

Joshua's idea makes a lot more sense than what they're doing now. At least there's a plan by LMA'ing with WEOA. Right now, I'd like to know what the plan is. A sad waste of a 50K stick. :'(

I hadn't heard her until today - Oh my goodness - I thought it was mid 1970's again. Why is it that people that really want to be on radio shouldn't be on radio. I was embarrased for her - it seemed forced, uncomfortable and something she totally shouldn't be doing. Keep the pole polished..

Hey? I can see if Scott would let me sell some, do that shift, get that girl a job on the pole and be my new girlfriend (since I am 'single' again).... ;D (Somewhat Joking)... ???
