WYNG to drop ESPN Radio Monday, ESPN moves to WYFX

We should all hire our afternoon personalities from the She Lounge or Hooters.
Must be doin something right. Dont see anyone writing about your station.

If they are able to pay the bills doing what they do, then that's the way it is. As far as the green talent, she has to learn somewhere. Considering 99 percent of the small market AM and FM signals in this country are run by a Pentium processor instead of a human, a chance to suck doesn't exist anymore. Just about all of us sucked when we started years ago either at a small market station or a larger station changing the "Sunday Morning Drive Time God Squad" tapes.

I listened awhile last week and heard them do a local high school baseball game. WHAT - how can you reach the demographic of the females they are trying to get when you have Cardinal baseball and high school sports during the day during prime listening time. I think I have moved back to the late 1950's. This station will get no book, no agency $'s and no respect. Who's in charge of the programming? Certainly a company as big as Withers Broadcasting has somebody who knows what the hell they are doing. Then again, maybe they don't. The next 9 months should be interesting. Changes, I'm sure, will be forthcoming.

Doesn't WYFX also have rights to Redbirds Baseball? And WFML in Vincennes?

That's kinda silly to have 3 affiliates that overlap that much...

Don't forget WSON in Henderson with a great daytime signal... I think WFML lost out when Doades five year lease ended with the VU Foundation.. Also, I think when WMSK moved to 101.3 in Morganfield lost the territory given WYFX across the Ohio in Mt. Vernon... WYNG takes the area that WFML had (with a much bigger footprint)... Next one up the road is Olney.. The Reds get Sporting News Affiliate WVMC in Mt. Carmel .... Cubbies on 910/103.1-WAKO in Lawrenceville and 1540/WBNL in Boonville... I'll check affiliates to see who's got what...

I listened to WYNG yesterday and it didnt sound that bad. The quality sounds great and the signal strength is awesome. As far as the programing, i believe that they are going local and fighting WSJD. So the programming isnt bad if you think of it as a local station. You have music that businesses can play, you have the world champion colts and cardinals that people like to listen to, and finally you have local (Mt. Carmel) sports which includes Aces Football which is a major money maker...but we'll see if it works out.

"...I listened to WYNG yesterday and it didnt sound that bad..." Deaf, one of Scott's teenaged "friends", a bill collector, Withers relative or employee or any combination of the above?

Skip's theory about the Cardinals fails to consider that the Cardinals only grant exclusivity by city/county of license. Morganfield, Henderson and Mt. Vernon are equally entitled to a Cards affiliation. The question that Skip fails to ask is how did WYNG get the Cardinals with a number of affiliates already in place, WSJD, WSON, WGBF, etc.

Actually...im none of the above. I do live in mt carmel but i no relation to Scott or the station. Im glad Mt. Carmel has a station that we can actually HEAR. WSJD is not operating at full power and when they are you cant hear them in parts of wabash county. But anyways, WSJD have been promoting Cubs on WSJD and the Reds on WVMC. Doesn't lawrenceville have the cubs??

I was listening yesterday as well, and it didn't seem that bad. The jock who was on about 2pm was good (definitely so for a weekender), and the music seemed to flow as well as most other AC stations I know.

WMSK is running the Redbirds on 101.3.. And when WFML had the Cardinals under Doades LMA, they kept ESPN/94.9 from getting STL ball (according to Eigrerski)... That's all I know... 8)

...WFML kept ESPN/94.9 from getting STL ball (according to Eigrerski)...

Mr. Eigrerski is confused somewhat. What I was told was that the Cardinals honored the existing affiliates contracts, WSJD, WFML, etc., (unlike 2007, with Withers' pressuring the Cardinals to move the affiliation this year) and WFML didn't keep anyone from anything. A Cardinals affiliation simply wasn't available. Just because Regent, along with the multitude of previous owners, foolishly attempted to convince the masses that 94.9 was an Evansville station (ha, ha), the Cardinals, and every other network, knew that it was 50 miles from Evansville, and it still is.

That being said, no one has pointed out that Withers has the highest number of Cardinals affiliations of any one group. Granted, they're in places that no one cares about. Nonetheless, that single factor is the principal reason that Withers was able to interfere with the existing relationships between WFML and WSJD. Legally speaking, it's known as tortous interference with a business relationship. Perhaps Mr. McCallen may wish to brush up on the legal, and moral, responsibilities of a general manager. Or, at the very minimum, retain the services of a good corporate attorney. Even up here in Indy, I'm hearing that he's going to need one. In fact, there are a couple of really good firms in town and I can recommend a name or two. If I were Scott, I wouldn't want to bet my career on a lawyer in Mt. Carmel. Well, unless I my career was coal miner.

Just as a point of clarification, WFML is still a Cardinal affiliate in 2007. The Cardinals will whore them out to as many affiliates as possible. Given their crass treatment of legendary flagship KMOX a couple of years ago, it should be no surprise that their broadcasting department will do anything if they think it might earn an extra dollar or two.

As an example, here are just a few of the affiliates that the 94.9 signal overlaps (feel free to add others I omitted):

WFML (Vincennes)
WOKZ (Fairfield)
WROY (Carmi)
WSEI (Olney)
WTYE (Robinson)
WSON (Henderson)

Now, that clears the air and makes sense... ::) By the way, WYNG's tower location is 25 miles from the intersection (as the bird flies) from the intersection of Old State Road and US 41 on the north end of Evansville (I had to do studio research for a potiential buyer last year)... Thus, it's more like 30 miles from the heart of the city population and 35 to the extreme Newburgh population and to the north edge of Henderson....

Okay - so last night the news guy at WSJD who owns 1 percent of WSJD attends a city council meeting in Mt Carmel. Read it in the Princeton Clarion.

He is still working for WSJD but announces he is helping to launch WYNG back to Mt Carmel. After 15 years out of town we're coming back he says.

Apparently Withers came into WSJD before the transfer was approved and approached all the WSJD staff. Made a big ruckus in the lobby and told all the staff he would hire them to help blow up their current employer.

So he hires a "fella" who has no vehicle because his credit is so bad he can't get one. Is this Withers normal mode of operation to be so inept to hire someone with no management experience to run his station?

This guy is trying to hire the rest of the staff from WSJD to work at WYNG while still working for them. Contacting clients to get them to transfer while still on the air at WSJD.

Did he do a background check? Call the high school school and ask about interviews in the locker room last year.

Oh my god, a Randy Bell sighting?

That station is doomed.

"Randy Bell", please explain what you mean. Which station is doomed - WSJD or WYNG? I don't really understand anything going on in Mt. Carmel. Its not like its a booming metropolis...

Randy Bell is the license owner of WSJD. If WYNG stays local it will run WSJD out of town. I heard a remote from Patriot Motors in Mt.Carmel on WYNG saturday...it sounded good. (must be using a marti) Just curious, why are a lot of stations using cell to do remotes? it sounds terrible!

They can get cells for trade and free nights and weekends.. Plus, Marti's cost factor and the gobbled up Marti Frequencies/Bands, have made alot of folks try sub-par technology in this realm...

Randy Bell is the license owner of WSJD.

I believe the information on Randy Bell being the "license owner" may be inaccurate.

If WYNG stays local it will run WSJD out of town.

That's a HUGE "If"....$1.5 million plus a $70,000 building payment will take the Withers group a very long time to recoup, even in a strong economic community.

I heard a remote from Patriot Motors in Mt.Carmel on WYNG saturday.

Really? That's odd you would have heard that seeing how I'm sure you were the board op for that remote!

Just curious, why are a lot of stations using cell to do remotes? it sounds terrible!

As terrible as the WYNG mid-day announcer?

I don't know about any other marti, but ours is good fro about 5 miles from the studio...that gets us to our COL, but beyond that...

Word on the street is that Withers is very unhappy with the financial results of WYNG sofar and big changes are coming. My question is what did he expect from a dying community in south eastern illinois. He gave up ESPN radio and at least some respectibility in the metro Evansville book for what - no book (down 2.7) and lack of agency money in the future. Not a very smart move.
