WYNG to drop ESPN Radio Monday, ESPN moves to WYFX

This was rather interesting fifteen years ago when 106.7 was attempting CHR against 96STO and they would disappear at a stoplight if the car next to them would be listening to STO.

Actually, it was 106.1 that up against WSTO, when we first went on the air with the new FM in Newburgh.

I know this, because I was the sales manager for WSYZ The Heat before we got sold. (My goodness, 1991 was 16 years ago!)

My observations (over many moons and back to Nussell owning it, before TOC/Lange).... 90 meters above average terrain.. On a short stick and the radiation goes right into the Red Bank on the west side of Evansville.. Thus, the east bank of the Red Bank is lost by 80% and the RF running around 107.5 and 104.1's antenna does not help the analog..... Then the signal clears out east of the Lloyd Expressway and 41 to a tolarable signal.. Not bad into Newburgh and Clean into Henderson, due to the flats that run through Union Township of Vanderburgh County (across the Ohio River from downtown Henderson)... You'd be suprised by the signal east of Henderson on the Audubon Parkway....

Thanks Skipper, that is exactly the kind of answer I was looking for. I lived on the westside when I was in town, and I know I had issues with the signal there. I'm glad the signal is better than I had thought for most of the metro, as it would be a shame for Evansville not to have a sports station.

I'm also glad Dan Egerski is involved. He is a good person.

Yes, 106.1 did CHR way back when at "The Heat". But shortly after 106.1 was LMA'ed to South Central and switched to oldies, 106.7 signed on the air as WBLZ. They hired Jamie Richards from STO for mornings and PD. CHR only lasted a few months before the owner threw in the towel and started simulcasting with his AM 1590.

Don Davis held on to 106.1 and LMA'ed it until finally selling to whoever was inside the 41 and Lincoln building. I can't remember if it was Clear Channel, Cumulis or Connoisseur but it was sometime in the last ten years.

Ah, gotcha. That makes more sense, then.

When DD set up the LMA, my wife and I decided it was time to move back to St. Louis. Both of us are from here, and a decade in Indiana was fun, but we missed being close to family.

I enjoyed my time in the market, as evidenced by the fact that I still check in on this board to see what is going on. My fist gig in town was overnights at WYNG. I was there for the big country breakout, and we soared to number one for a while. I transitioned into Sales at WYNG, and then from there, it was an advertising agency job. Then I went to work in sales for Larry Aiken at WGBF. Then, The Heat and WGAB.

So it doesn't get lost over on the Illinois Airwaves board for those of you who may have missed it and to make it a permanent record of this thread, here's the interesting/disturbing message about the WYNG GM posted close to a month ago by "Withers Insider":

What Was He Thinking?
Posted on 9/8/2007 at 09:02:50 AM by Withers Insider

I can't believe Mr. Withers knew what he was getting when hired the new GM of his recently (January) acquired WYNG in Mt. Carmel.

I saw this with my own two eyes when I was at that station recently. Their GM has such poor dental hygiene, one of his front teeth literally rotted out!! And to make things worse, once it fell out, he would just insert back in as a temporary stop gap so to speak. When you would go out and eat with him, he would take it out and put it in his shirt pocket!!

And, (it gets better) he recently swallowed the tooth and now is walking around with a hole in his head!!

I'd hate to guess whether he's waiting around to retrieve the lost tooth or not, but I'm guessing he probably is.

NONE of this is flaming...it is FACT. Sad as it is that he has someone like that working in our company.

I didn't even get to the part where they repossessed his car and he's now using the station van as his personal ride. Or, the fact he took over a station with a 3.3 rating and drove it into the ground with a 0.6.

Again, just stating the way it is and NONE of this has been embellished in any way, shape, or form!!

The management qualifications for Withers Broadcasting has taken a serious step backward!!

I heard on Friday (from a source close the company) that Withers is not keeping the format the same at WYNG - believe it or not, he's trying to get ESPN back and going to dump the "all over the place" format that it has become. What took him so long - Sports was the perfect format for WYNG. Change is not always good - now he's trying to decide what to do with the overpriced talent that he has currently. I wonder if he'll be able to get his "book" back in time to recapture agency buys? Wow - what a lesson this is. Apparently there is a call letter change in the works. Also, don't think that the current operation people know anything about this. Apparently they are not involved in the decision process.

"...don't think that the current operation people know anything about this..."

They do now.

"overpriced talent"

It's one or the other. By definition, if they're talented, then they are not "overpriced". On the other hand, if they're overpriced, then they're not talented. Chicken or the egg, so to speak.

Hopefully, Mr. Lankford is the forgiving type and finds a place for the one talent that they've got on the air, Rodger Beard.

The updated date for the change of format and call letter change is Wednesday, Jan 2, 2008. Apparently a sport format with call letters reflecting that. Studio to stay in Mt. Carmel but with a sales office on the north side of Evansville by the 4-H Center. Evansville book speaks.....

Wow, only 1.5 million??????

I heard WYNG over the weekend... a a/c station that is so heavy on sports... but that's the Wither's way... whatever.

Who's Scott Allen? He's the voice guy, news guy, and talent?

Will someone tell him how to read and write news though... he read a entire newspaper article.. quite a few actually... it's actually funny to listen to them, considering they're trying so hard to "take over WIKY"...

We'll see if they really flip formats.

I think that's the extent of his "news writing"....reading from the newspaper, and other TV & radio station's websites. Play this fun game, listen to his news and as you do, browse the internet to see which station and/or newspaper the story came from. Withers should be paying a stringer fee to these other reporters!

Withers must be so proud! ::)

Re: Looking for Jamie Richards

Hello All,

I'm trying to track down an old radio friend. His name is Jamie Richards. I worked with him in the 80's and 90's, the last I heard from him was when he was working at WSTO-FM. I heard rumor that he was in Florida now, but I have not been able to track him down. If you know where he is let me know.

Thanks,
Bo Bradshaw
