WYSP To Flip To WIP Simulcast "By Labor Day"

Let's see, right now WYSP is the FOURTH rocker in town behind WRFF, WMMR and WMGK. That means they're not getting in on a lot of media buys, and they can't charge "top of the card" rates for the ones they can. Overall music stations outcume talk stations, but that doesn't always translate to billing. It's all about the Benjamins...

Meanwhile, CBS has a heritage sports station stuck on AM, and the rights to the Eagles and the Phillies. Doesn't it make sense to overhaul the brand, put it on FM and combine all the sports p-b-p on the same frequency? That would totally outcume what 94.1 is doing now, and most likely would chase 97.5 out of the format, adding those listeners as well. CBS has been doing well with FM sports talk, particularly in Boston & Pittsburgh, plus they're adding new markets like Cleveland. The formula is obviously working. It makes all the sense in the world.

The only thing keeping 97.5 in business right now is that the target demo for sports stations has grown up in a world that, for all intents and purposes, doesn't have AM radio. Listeners 18-35 have always gotten their music from FM (if they get it from radio at all) and are less interested in the news and talk formats that dominate AM nowadays.

When they do shift down to AM they are turned off by the poor sound quality (compared to FM), the static, etc. So if they can find PBP on an FM frequency they will go there.

Andy Bloom had some interesting remarks here:
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/127802043.html

"The fact is, going back to last fall, the football season, you will find that Howard Eskin, on little AM station, beat an FM sports-talker pretty consistently..."

"Little AM station," hmmm? Oh, and the same article quotes Bloom as saying, "We aren't ready to announce [a new lineup] yet... We're working on a few things."

"A few things." Like, say, an FM simulcast? Hmmm...

Re: WIP to announce takeover of 94 WYSP, new line-up tomorrow

It only took five years of constant rumors about the inevitable death of WYSP for it to finally happen.

Do we know if they're going to change the call letters to WIP-FM? They could stash the WYSP calls somewhere safe.

I also think this fuels the rumors that CBS is in the market for 106.9. They're making sure WIP has someplace safe if they need to jettison 610.

Re: WIP to announce takeover of 94 WYSP, new line-up tomorrow

Wasn't 93.3 the original WIP-FM? I know 94.1 was WIBG-FM and 102.1 was WFIL-FM, but where was WIP?

Re: WIP to announce takeover of 94 WYSP, new line-up tomorrow

Yeap. WIP AM & FM, owned by Metromedia, was 610 AM and 93.3 FM. The WMMR call reflects the MetroMedia ownership back in the day.

Thanks, Julius. My, sports radio in Philadelphia has come quite a long way since the "Gimp" days. ::)

I'd leave them as is... In a way, "WYSP" sounds as close to "WIP" as you can get... Furthermore, everybody knows that call letters mean bupkis in today's PPM universe.

A partial transcript of Angelo Cataldi on the WIP morning show moments ago, teasing a "big" announcement that he will be making after 9 AM. Not so much the simulcast, he's pushing the addition of a new host that he must have said was "big" about 59 times in this segment alone:

"There is a part of this story that nobody's got... A big name... Big name... Big... Big... That big name is gonna be a big part of the new big WIP... Even in the depeest, darkest chat rooms, even in the most bizarre corners of the Internet, this name has not been whispered... at 9 AM, this name will be bellowed from the mountaintops... This name will make people go, whoa..."

Keith Jones: "Will I know this name?"

Angelo: "Yes, you will know the name... This name -- there is not one, not one person listening right now, not one, who does not know this name."

If this "big" name he speaks of is former Eagles running back Brian Westbrook, he forgot to check this corner of the Internet:
http://www.buzzonbroad.com/2011/08/brian-westbrook-set-to-join-610-wip-radio.html

I'm also pretty sure BIG Daddy Graham could be part of it as well...

My prediction of the lineup:

6a-10a Angelo Cataldi and the morning team
10a-2p Rob Ellis (or Jody Mac) & Glenn Macnow
2p-7p Anthony Gargano & Ike Reese
7p-12a Big Daddy Graham & Jody McDonald (or Rob Ellis)

Pretty sure Brian Westbrook is taking Hugh Douglas' spot on the weekends (Saturdays and Eagles pre-game shows etc.)

Staff Meeting at WYSP today at 8:30, say good bye!!!!!

According to Howard Stern, a staff meeting is happening at 8:30 am today, format change is for sure. Stay tuned.

Re: WIP to announce takeover of 94 WYSP, new line-up tomorrow

Philly has never really supported two sports stations for long. Many believe that the only thing that has kept 97.5 alive is the fact that they are on FM.

I keep reading about what might happen to 610, but what about 97.5 and 950? It seems to me that the more likely scenario is that 94.1 and 610 may simulcast (with some overflow here and there), putting the final nail in Greater Media's Sports radio coffin.

FOUR sports stations in Philly? Or even THREE? I don't think so.

Re: Staff Meeting at WYSP today at 8:30, say good bye!!!!!

Stern just got done ranting that WYSP has failed since he left and went to satellite. Been going on for about 15 minutes now.

Re: Staff Meeting at WYSP today at 8:30, say good bye!!!!!

I guess the rock war is dead. WMMR wins! I thought for years if CBS wasn't required to get rid of WMMR, it would have changed formats years ago. WYSP is just one of CBS' formerly great rock stations going away. WNEW & K-rock in NYC are gone. WBCN in Boston is gone (for sports). Other cities?

Here’s the new daily lineup:

* 6 a.m. – 10 a.m.: Angelo Cataldi and the Morning Show
* 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.: Michael Barkann and Ike Reese
* 1 p.m. – 6 p.m.: Anthony Gargano and Glen Macnow
* 6 p.m. – 10 p.m.: Rob Ellis

I think the call sign is going to change. CBS has registered 94WIP.com and has it redirecting to their WIP page.

I really thought Jody McDonald would be part of the new line-up. Not too sure the new midday show is going to work. I do like Gargano and Macnow in the afternoons, but five hours is a long shift. I wonder if 94 WIP ( I'll never get used to that) will pick up the Phillies' games in 2012.

Rob Ellis said that they'll have all local teams, NFL fb on 610 and sometimes 94.1, and NCAA tournaments on 610.

well thats a bit of a downgrade to only have the Eagles on FM "sometimes". I get that the 610 signal is probably stronger, but com'mon!
