WZJZ Z100 Ft Myers Stunting; Major Announcement Mon 6a

FROM ALL ACCESS:
WZJZ Begins Stunting; Major Announcement On Monday

CLEAR CHANNEL Rhythmic AC WZJZ (Z100)/FT. MYERS is stunting mode! The site says: "Listen to Z100 all weekend as we spotlight featured artists from the iHEART RADIO MUSIC FESTIVAL. "Tune in MONDAY morning at 6a for a HUGE announcement." Is this a giveaway of iHEART FESTIVAL tickets? Or, is the format wheel about to spin?

What?! I always had Z100.1 LOCKED when I visit home. I hope this is just temporary. :'(

I guess they're feeding off from the playlist of the Y100.7 in Miami now?

Looks like CC is taking on Beasely's B103.7 and WINK 96.9 with this move. 100.1's signal is not great on the south side of the market in the Naples area so they will drawing primarily from the Ft Myers and Port Charlotte areas. Not sure if this will do anything for their ratings or not, time will tell.

Seeing that Cheap Channel owns the station, the move is only temporary until they flip to a different format years from now.

Wow... that's original. :-\ With Tampa Bay's 93.3 FLZ, Wild 94.1 and the new Hot 101.5 EASILY blasting into 100.1's coverage area plus the established local B103.9, I'm sure they'll be making a big impact real soon. ;)

I remember when B103.9 was B103.7 years ago. :D

I don't think this market is even rated anymore. Perhaps Z100.1 had weak sales?

Not really. The Bay area stations don't perform well, nor can they had be heard well, in much of Southwest FL.
They are however major players in the following markets: Tampa, Sarasota, Lakeland, as well as (gasp!) Sebring.

The only "Tampa market" FM station that reaches Ft. Myers reliably is WHPT (The Bone), and even they are spotty to the south. On the flipside, Y100 can be heard in a good chunk of Manatee county, north to Bradenton, all but disappearing in South Pinellas County.

Some will remember CHR was given a short-lived shot on this frequency before (WKFF "Kiss"), before flipping to Hot Talk WRLR (Real Radio).

I can't believe I missed that! I, too, remember B103.7.

Many stations in the market are no longer rated by Arbitron.

When I was referring to the Tampa stations, I was hinting at the areas North of Ft. Myers where 100.1 is powerful. Yes, I realize the sales are in Ft. Myers and Naples but if you live in the area between Port Charlotte and Bradenton, you have quite the selection of hit music radio.

100.1 has been the revolving wheel of formats for many, many years.

The Riverview stations are received quite well in a car.
The "Y100" you mention is not received at all.

You don't start receiving it until you are on the Alley.

Doh! I meant WZJZ (Z100).

Even so, Z100 is not dependable past Sa-ra-so-ta!
The 100.1 signal moved from Charlotte Harbor @3kw to East Rotunda @100kw. It had a decent signal into Sa-ra-so-ta! and Bradenton and even north of the Bay.
Once they moved it south, it became much more difficult to pick up here.

It is an undependable signal in Sa-ra-so-ta!, north of Fruitville Road (I-75, exit 210).

I didn't realize they (WZJZ) had moved their antenna south (I notice that they are slightly directional now as well)......... I guess that explains why I don't recieve them on a regular basis in St. Pete any longer.

On their website, WZJZ are calling themselves the new(shades of Cox :) ) Y100.

This station truly has been a revolving door of formats over the years. When it first started out it was a local station serving Charlotte County. But since it went to 100,000 watts it has been trying to server the entire SW Florida market. Problem is that it's signal does not reach well in the southern end of the market in the Naples area.

CC found that out several years ago when they moved Cat Country from 107.1 to 100.1 thinking that the big signal would make Cat Country more competitive with Gator Country. Just the opposite happened. Cat Country lost even more listeners in the Naples area. CC ended up moving Cat Country back to 107.1.

This signal is just in a bad place in my opinion. It does not serve the entire SW Florida market well and it does not get into the Tampa area well either. Personally I think they would be smart to market this station to Port Charlotte/Sarasota/Bradenton and not Ft Myers/Napes.

I think you are right on the money.

They might be able to move it back north to serve Sa-ra-so-ta! With a stronger signal.

CC-Tampa does not generally care about Sa-ra-so-ta! But their control of the 100.1 license coupled by the strength of WFLZ and the competition offered by the other Tampa Bay market signals, unless WFLZ gives up the fight, it probably won’t happen.

With the switch from one letter of the alphabet to the other, I guess the next logical step is getting a new set of call letters! No sense having one Z in your calls (let alone two) when you're now going by the "Y-100" identity... I bet the new call letters will probably be somewhat identical to Miami's WHYI, too...
