XTRA SPORTS HIT HARD BY TUESDAY FIRINGS

I have it on good authority that Xtra Sports blew out afternoon host Jeff Dean, who's contract was set to expire in February, the afternoon producer and update man Joe Mack (who has been at the station for over a decade), and Travis Johnson, who was a valuable member of the morning show crew. Promotions excusing all part-timers. However, all of the highly paid upper-management personnel did somehow manage to survive the mass firings, which were intentionally executed during Obama's inauguration in order to mask the magnitude of the dismissals.

So it's a new local host in PM drive or Fox Sports Radio?

Yet another nail in the coffin of KDUS wannabe XTRA 910. Jurecki's the only guy worth listening to on that station anymore.

wow, I had really thought that Jeff was becoming a really good sports radio guy. I really hope they don't replace him with the guy that was on yesterday. He was ..... blah.

What to do with 9~Ten? With the advent of Sports Parking Lot 6~Tweny, KGME has become as irrelevant as Nappy. Sure you could put Kay Oh Why on the 9~Ten frequency and sell 12~Thirty, but what's the point? The Buckeye Boyz say sell both and concentrate your effors on giving KFWhyEye an FM home. And HD-2 does not count!

Jeff is good, there are so many crappy hosts out there, (Bickley, Wolf, the guy with Wolf, John "did you know I went to Cal?" Bloom, the morons on 1310 in the morning, and the morons on 1310 in the afternoon).

Bummer, I hope he gets work, he did a good job.

Bickley and MJ move to afternoon drive 2-6 starting Friday...your new XTRA 910 morning show is....Dan Patrick. Clear Channel did the same thing to XTRA in '01, completely cleaning house and holding on to only an afternoon drive show. Remember Tony Bruno in the morning? And they're right back where they were then. One local show on "the Valley's Sports Leader". Disappointing. Good luck to Jeff and Joe Mack and Travis. Looks like I'll be spending even more time listening to Howard on Sirius.

Very sad to see Jeff go! I heard the afternoon show earlier talking about the new lineup and moving Bickley and MJ to afternoons. Jeff always carried himself very well on the show, and I thought had a great idea with the whole "Sports Discussion" theme for the show. I wish Jeff all the best wherever he ends up! I am glad that Bick and MJ will remain on with the station though, even with the move to afternoons.

I am very sad to see Jeff go. He was, in my opinion, a pioneer into the new realm of radio. He genuinely cared about his listeners and gave them a voice to be heard. I also thought his, "Sports discussion radio" was a great hook and something fresh. I would call his show sparingly and he always greeted me with a "glad to have you aboard" and would never hang up without a "thank you" or a "great call". Truly one of the nicer and more genuine people I've ever listened to in my many years of devotion to sports radio. And even though he's a "Mildcat", I always respected his objectivity and no-nonsense take on local sports.

I'm sure he will land a job somewhere and make a difference. It's too bad CC didn't offer him something else on the station. It's apparent that he and Jurecky are the only 2 people in town that can talk football with some intelligence. While I'm glad that I'll be able to listen to MJ on my home, I will miss the passion that Jeff seemed to bring to his show.

Jeff, if you read this, give us a holla wherever you end up. We hate San Antonio too!

I could not have said it better myself.

So let me get this straight there are 3 "sports" stations here in town and 1 morning show and it is hosted by an over the top freak and a moron who thinks everybody is stupid.

So, which one is Wolfley? ;D

Seriously, sad to say, there is only one legit sports station anymore and that's KTAR. They have all the local sports locked up other than the Coyotes (who may be leaving after this season anyway - rumor has them returning to Winnipeg) on XTRA. They have so much play-by-play that they still have to farm some of it out to now-Spanish/religion-with-IBOC KMVP 860, which TMISU still haven't sold.

XTRA is a shadow of its former self, but since CC owns a part of Fox Sports Radio, plus Jim Rome's syndicator Premiere, they probably want as much exposure for their network hosts as possible.

And KDUS? Well, Gumpdusky is still Gumpdusky, but it's the Sports Station That Refuses To Die. Not that anybody's listening, but it'll last as long as Sporting News Radio lasts (speaking of "refusing to die"). But they do carry more local content than XTRA now. Maybe they'll pick up a few listeners now.

Very sorry to hear about these people losing their jobs. I hope they find work soon.

C.C. had to do something with XTRA if they plan on keeping the sports-talk format because it is getting killed by KTAR. They needed some big changes.

Yes, class acts were lost at XTRA. Joe Mack was not only a member of the station but of the sports community in Phoenix for over a decade. Travis Johnson is the most talented technical guy in the business, but thats why he was blown out- competition for a guy that shows off his gut at D-Backs games. But for anyone to call Jeff Dean *gulp* good or even satisfactory obviously joined him on drinking his own Kool-aid. He should have been gone 2 years ago, right when he started

Facts: Jeff flat-lined against Gambo and Ash along with Rock and Manuch (thats not easy to do against the latter). Pioneer of "Sports discussion" radio? Really? I am sorry, but isn't any caller driven format a discussion- it's not like he poured his listeners a cup of coffee and chatted of scones. His insights were uneducated, inflated, and dull. He would read the AZ Rep and spew out the play-by-play of the games the night before. Ill-formated and absolutely the worst show that has been on XTRA for that long of time.

Jeff was the least respected guy in the sports environment for a reason. He never showed to games, angered colleagues for being absurd around them, could not get guests because of "players hadn't heard of him", and his presentation was painful to listen to. Maybe, He snoozed through his radio 101 class he took online.

Jeff failing isn't his fault, he should've never been put in that position. He was ready and was never groomed, he was thrown into a position he wasnt qualified for and thats because he was cheap. Good guy, just really bad radio.

Although I do agree with a lot of what you say here i do believe that Jeff was hands down better then Rock and Manuch. They have the worst show since the positive side of sports. They are un listenable.

My point exactly. Jeff was so bad no one listened to him and thats why Rock and Manuch would beat him in the books. Not to mention the fact of the Steve Breaston/Sean Taylor incident. He asked Breaston if he was gearing up for the hard-hitting Washington Redskins Secondary that included Sean Taylor- Taylor was brutally murdered a year before in a well-publicized investigation. Should have been off the air right then and there for shear stupidity. Good thing no one was listening!

Wow, I did not know about the Taylor incident. That is really bad right there.
