Yankees Stay On WCBS News Radio 880

Mike Francesa just broke on his show:
CBS Radio just signed a deal that will keep them on WCBS 880 through the 2012 season with CBS in works of a much longer deal after the 2012 season.

That's good! Maybe the Yankees will not go to either ESPN Radio at 1050 AM or to WABC at 770 under Cumulus to bring it back, that's not going to happen. Good for WCBS and the Yankees, I hope they will extend the deal for the 2012 season. And I hope that WKXP/WZAD's "The Wolf" and WPDA in the Hudson Valley will stay with the Yankees as well for the 2012 season.

That is great news for me. Each year, I enjoy the early spring afternoon games. When the Phils aren't on and the Yankees are, I can tune in WCBS and enjoy the games on the ride home from work.

BTW, as the flagship station for both Rush and Hannity, why would WABC want the Yanks? Those afternoon games are a real bummer when you have to pre-empt your expensive hosts.

What are the odds that the "longer deal" will be on FM?

I'd say doubtful this time around. With no FM sports threat, and a thus-far marginal threat for FM news, CBS doesn't have any incentive to blow up an FM, and yanks don't fit in with anything they've got going on FM right now.

More often than not, the games preempted the evening programming. WABC never had a set weeknight schedule post-6PM until they lost the rights to WCBS.

Prediction Next Year When Contract Expires:

Either:

Yanks on WFAN (Mets do not renew or can't renew there)

Yanks on WOR (Yankees buy station to start there own sports station)

Yanks on WABC (Cumulus starts sports station or ESPN buys station from Cumulus)

I think one of the three will happen

Yankees to WFAN makes sense. WFAN also has the Giants, so that would give them NY's two most traditional franchises. WFAN would get higher ad rates from Yankee games.

Yanks to WOR only if the team buys the station. I don't think they will.

Cumulus is more likely to start a sports station on 770 and affiliate it with ESPN. I doubt ESPN will buy WABC. If that happens, 770's current talk format will move to 95.5 FM, which means blowing up 'PLJ. :)
