David Yates had such high hopes and goals for KAND, but, sadly, I don't think any of it materialized. There was talk of having some notables hosting talk shows there (Larry Dixon for one, who soon took an offer from Platinum 96.7 instead; plus Alex Burton and Kevin McCarthy) and adopting a "Green" format--using Yates' prowess as a home repair specialist and talk show host to help DIY's to convert their homes to energy savers. The station was going to be a "green" model itself. I don't know if David's ever gone public with the entire story, but he seemed to be onto something, got the station for a song ($101K, IIRC,) developed a cool website for the station, etc, but nothing ever happened with it. I did just find that his www.hgradio.com website is still up, and apparently is syndicated...so perhaps no real need for a local outlet anymore, anyway.

Still, kind of a neat coup while it lasted, since Yates worked for KAND in his earliest radio days, then came back to own the station later. Similar to the situation with Steve Eberhart and KGAF.

The article mentions Mike Capps as a new part-owner. Per Wikipedia, "Capps spent part of his career as a reporter, bureau chief, and executive sports director for WFAA-TV in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. He worked as an assignments manager and deputy bureau chief for ABC News in St. Louis and as a weekend anchor for KPRC-TV in Houston. While working for CNN, he covered the Gulf War as well as the Waco Siege, which garnered him an Emmy Nomination and a CableACE Award." Mike's an "email friend" of mine and a good guy. (And not to be confused with Ken Capps.)

I can tell you with certainty that running a radio station is not as easy as you might think.

It is a very difficult process at best, and the easiest part sometimes is perfecting the programming, the rest is very tough sledding!

Not to say it can't be done, it can, but this romantic dream many have of owning a radio station has nothing to do with the realities of the business world.

Perfecting the business is quite a whole new world for many. Without an effective business plan, it is a lost cause before sign on!

My point is only that the dream of every air talent is to own their own station. An air talent may very well be able to program an excellent radio station, but, the business of the radio station is a far bigger thing. To do it effectively, one needs knowledge, experience and education in both, programming and business (and I don't just mean Sales).

The days of putting excellent programming on the air and letting it come to you is long gone. It just doesn't work that way any more. You need excellent programming AND an excellent business plan.
