Yea Baby! Moby to be on WNGC/Athens

And you cannot sit

I can and I will. I have never heard of it before. And I listened for two hours trying to find anything that wasn't generic, and I only heard one Adcock furniture commercial. I have a 4-year bachelor's degree in broadcasting, so you don't have to be condescending as if I don't know anything about radio. Do you have a degree in broadcasting? I learned to analyze radio stations, and to listen objectively. I just don't like Moby's show and feel that the Athens area listeners are the ones who have lost out here, because they no longer have a great local morning show.

> WHy are you taking this personally?

I am not taking it personally. You are the one who attacked Moby. Just because you don't like him doesn't mean everyone shares your tastes.

> Because I sure don't know where all these obscure towns are that Moby

I wasn't not talking about obscure towns. Griffin is the largest city between Atlanta and Macon.

Air Tran is the second largest carrier at Hartsfield (behind Delta). When you make comments like that, it shows your ignorance.

You left out the part about his highly-rated morning show on WKHX for 11 years. His syndication effort just started. He's up to 6 stations now with more coming. He's working hard trying to build a network of small and medium market stations for his program. And he's doing it all by himself, unlike John Boy & Billy, Bob & Tom, Rick & Bubba, etc., who all have corporate giants behind them.

Moby talks about towns in the WNGC listening area (amoung others in Georgia)... And the ones you named off are in the WNGC listening area. What would be different if Tim and Scott talked about these towns? Moby may not be a Athens local show, but at least he is a Georgia local show.

I read his show's bio, and before getting his

I wasn't born here either... been here since 1999, and I havn't memorized the map of Georgia as well... but, I wouldn't turn off a show because I don't know the towns the jock is talking about.

Rhubarb at Eagle could use the company if you don't like Moby on WNGC.

Unbelievable...

> Rhubarb at Eagle could use the company if you don't like

From earlier messages that I've read from you, apparently you work at WNGC-- and you have THIS attitude? You've been in radio HOW long? Or any business for that matter...that's like someone working at KFC saying "If you don't like our chicken you can always go to Mrs. Winners..." or a Chevy dealer telling a customer, "If you don't like what I've got here there's a Ford dealer across the street."

The point is, aren't radio guys supposed to be doing everything they can to forward whatever station/network they work for, make it the best and most appealing product that they can provide, DRAW IN listeners and NOT encourage listeners to look elsewhere?

If the quote I used above is the prevailing attitude in Athens, can the future be very bright there at all?

I've been "in the buisness" long enough. I really didn't have a negative attitude when I said what I did. I was suggesting who she could turn to for her mornings. I've defended Moby... after giving positives on why I feel she should listen to Moby, she still doesn't want to listen to him... so I suggested another country radio station in the area. Period. Nothing negative to Rhubarb, I know the man, and he is a great guy. Nothing negative to the woman who post we've been replying to, she has her reasons.

We ARE trying to draw in listeners (and we have, many new ones), and keep the some of the regulars to the old morning show... we can only offer so much. If the customer is unsatisfied, we thank you for your time and hope you change your mind in the future.

> If the quote I used above is the prevailing attitude in

The future will be bright in Athens and WNGC. My quote means nothing. Like I said above, I wasn't rude... all I did was offer her someone who she may enjoy listening to that she can pick up where she lives.

Whether or not you were rude or had a bad attitude while typing is beside the point. It seems to me that the general position you (and maybe others in Athens) have is "Moby's here, and if you don't like it, tough cookies."
That's not how this game works. You can insist on having a particular program or host all you want, but if the audience leaves you, you're toast.

By the way, how do you know you're getting "many new" listeners? There hasn't been time to do another trend...I doubt the station has done any market research or callout...what do you do, have caller ID on the request line and keep notes?

Like I said before...I have nothing against Moby as a person (even though he was condescending when I met him once) and I love WNGC as much as anybody.
I just think there were better possibilities than what was chosen. What was the advantage to bringing in ANY syndicated morning show? 106.1 is a signal with huge potential and even running the risk of sounding like someone else out there ANYWHERE, if I were in a management role, would be a risk I would not be willing to take. I'd have done a search...maybe have guys (or gals) try out for a day or so at a time for a couple of weeks and have the listeners decide. After all, any station's success is largely their decision anyway.

I agree with you on that.

Callers and emails to the main station phone line. It is too early to tell what impact on what Moby will have on WNGC as far as ratings.

Again, I agree with you on that point...

> Same with Rick & Bubba and John Boy & Billy.

Umm ... I believe that would have to be qualified with a market-to-market look.
Those two programs are some of the strongest in the southeast in certain markets.

You are taking it personally. And I didn't attack the man, just his show, which I think is very dull and trite. I had never heard of him before July 25, and never heard anything he'd done, so my first impressions were unbiased. I tried to be objective. But a generic morning show??? Radio is not TV. Radio is supposed to be for the market it is in, for the listeners that live there. When you are used to an awesome morning show (I don't even listen to country music, I tuned in for the personalities at WNGC and the music was secondary), a syndicated Anywhere show just doesn't cut it. And I have never heard the other DJ's you mentioned either. My point is, and only this, that WNGC made a bad decision. And I have been checking around the internet--there are many unhappy and disappointed former WNGC listeners out there.

So? It doesn't change the fact that Athens didn't need a syndicated morning show, adding to someone else's network of small and medium market stations.

Ok. I guess I thought everyone heard of Airtran. My bad...

I guess it depends on when you listen. Many commercials have to be generic because of the large area WNGC covers. A few commercials are aimed to the Gainesville area, a few to the Lawrenceville area and so on. You won't find a "Athens only" commercial set.

> I have a 4-year bachelor's degree in broadcasting, so you

I wasn't trying to come off that way. Some people who post to these boards don't usually have a clue on what is going on in broadcasting.

> Do you have a degree in broadcasting?

Yes, I do. Been "in the buisness" for almost 10 years, in both tv news/production and radio production.

Then I respect your feelings twards Moby. I guess we we will have to wait until the book comes out later this year on Moby's impact on WNGC.

> My point is, and only this, that WNGC made a bad decision.

That's YOUR opinion. Just because you don't likie Moby doesn't mean that WNGC made a bad decision.

I was never a big Moby fan either. I thought his act was like Hee-Haw on the radio. But guess what? Listeners love that and Moby has a huge fan base, not only in Georgia, but all over the country. He was on in 40 markets when syndicated by ABC and many of those fans still e-mail him on a regular basis. He'll be back on in some of those same markets soon.

> And I have been checking around the internet--there are many
> unhappy and disappointed former WNGC listeners out there.

From what I've seen, there are even more loyal Moby fans who are thrilled that they can hear him again.

> It doesn't change the fact that Athens didn't need a
> syndicated morning show

Says who? That decision lies with the ownership/management of WNGC, not with you. If you don't like it, don't listen. The manager of the very first radio station I worked for used to tell people that if they didn't like what they heard, they had two knobs on their radio - they could use one knob to turn it off or the other knob to change the station. Suprisingly, he went on to be a politician).

WNGC's next book will tell the story. If Moby tanks, be sure to write me and say "I told you so." But I doubt that I'll hear from you because that's not going to happen. WNGC's ratings will increase with Moby.

Tom: I know lots of people with degrees who are flipping burgers at Wendy's. Meanwhile, those of us who know what we're doing are out there doing it. Except that I'm "retired" now you know.

The same bright folks who destroyed one of the best "brands" for a radio station in the peach state by re-naming it the more generic "Light."

Nice, Taylor. So now instead of discussing broadcasting and a radio show, you have resorted to insults and mocking. Very mature and intelligent. If you have to resort to insults, which I have not done nor has anyone else but you, then you must not have anything constructive to add to the conversation. You are just trying to start something, but I'll not stoop to that. Have fun acting like a 2nd grader.

Flamo a mama,

I don't have a dog in this fight....I could care less who is on the air at WNGC!"The folks who own and operate WNGC should pick the morning show they think is best.
It is fun to pick at folks over their "radio hereos" just like all the other stupid stuff we worship.(i.e.Sports heroes, Rock stars, TV reality shows etc.)Why do some people get so emotional about some schmoo JUST because he/she "is on the radio?"(It's good that they do....fat kids get to have actual sex, if they're a DJ,when thay grow up! Even Quisimoto got girls after he became a jock.)I don't understand the "star worship" mentality....seems like a throw back to the days of monarchy.I don't like bowing to "kings and queens."
It's just sorta' funny to see how gaa gaa people get over "morning show guys"
I apologize if you felt berated, but I do wonder WHY you are so emotional about this. It's just a radio show!!
The only thing I can figure is.....you must be an insider.
Why did the old morning guy really decide to leave?

Believe it!

Sorry. But you can't please all the people all the time. Obviously, she has tried the product and didn't like it. So what's the alternative? Tell her to try it again? Sometimes in business you have to say, "Sorry, I can't help you with that."

That said, I'd be curious as to how you would respond to flamingmom if you were in a position to do so.

Re: Believe it!

> Sorry. But you can't please all the people all the time.

Yeah, but with the attitude like GABuddah expressed (Rhubarb would like the company if you don't like Moby) are they even TRYING? Do they care?

Obviously, she has tried the product and didn't like it. So
> what's the alternative? Tell her to try it again?

> That said, I'd be curious as to how you would respond to

I doubt I'd have to, since I wouldn't have brought in a syndicated morning show.
Like I said in another post, I'd have done a search. A REAL one...auditioning people for a day or so at a time and then give the audience a chance to give their input, maybe via a website or email...even the phones.
That way you could please a reasonable majority of the audience and live up to some of the promos running on WNGC saying "we listened to you."
In the mean time, before the search is over, you run with who you've got and try to deliver a decent product.

Don't try to tell me that WNGC had no choice but syndication, either. We're fresh out of a book, and since Athens isn't really a ranked market you're not under pressure to constantly make demonstrable ratings numbers, as opposed to being in Atlanta where you're constantly in a book. It's not like management was under a deadline and had to decide on a new show right away. It was a chance to re-invent themselves...instead they decided to join a pack rather than pay someone. Was it a money thing? I understand Southern Broadcasting has bought a couple of other stations recently, besides Athens and Rome. Why not do what they can to cultivate the stations (WNGC for example) in to something really great and attractive to listener and advertisers alike, instead of swallowing other signals? Doesn't it take money to make money?

Also, what's with this "flagship" business? Moby's not in Athens every morning.
To use talk shows as a model...WABC is Hannity's flagship, because that's where the show originates (I think Rush uses WABC, too, when he's not in Florida).
WSB is Boortz's flagship, because that's where he usually is. Is the "flagship" thing supposed to make listeners who can clearly tell that the show is piped in feel better somehow?

Anyway, long story short, FMDawg...I doubt I'd have to answer to flamingmom. At least not for the reasons she's complaining about. I'll grant that she might have other reasons with something else the station might be doing if I were in charge...And you're right, to a point, that you can't please everybody all the time. But in this business you have to try to get as many as you can, and I don't see how this decision is doing that.

I can't believe I'm even taking the time to answer this drivel. First of all, I am no hero-worshipper. You have not been following along. I'll type slowly so that you can keep up. Tim C. is gone, that is that. It's sad but it happens. He was awesome. Moby is not. He is syndicated and definetly not local. I like a local morning show. It has the feeling of a family, you can relate to it, and it is enjoyable. And if you don't get emotional about things, then you are either devoid of feeling or dead. Emotions make life what it is. And I don't know what your comment about fat kids had to do with anything, and it was extremely rude. How old are you anyway? 14? And a true apology does not go: "I apologize IF you. . ." See, that puts the blame back on the person you are supposedly apologizing to, and off of yourself. That way, you don't have to take responsibility for your actions and it makes it the other person's fault. But I digress. My original posting on this board was to express my displeasure with WNGC and their decision to go syndicated, and my displeasure still stands. Until they make the right decision to go local again, I and many others in the Athens area will not be listening. And when you are in business to get listeners, it is your loss when people change the channel. And if you need proof that I am not alone in my opinion about this change to syndicated "Moby" I will paste and copy the comments from another board.

If your talking about the postings on the Atlanta Urnal-Constipation's radio blog site when Moby was announced to be on WNGC, most of those posts are from people who didn't like Moby when he was on Kicks, and havn't heard him lately. I used to not like Moby, but he has grown on me. I understand your take on wanting a local show, but this is the "new" age of radio, small market local shows are like dinasours and the meteor is coming... (my spelling is bad, I know) WNGC probibly is loving the fact they are picking up Moby's old listeners from Atlanta. If they get those listeners... ad revenues will most likely go up. Its all about the money.
