You better watch out, better not cry: Savage and Ingraham coming to town

Another right-wing talker in our midst, replacing the line-up of brokered shows on 1180:

Conservative talkers Laura Ingraham and Michael Savage have a new home in the burbs. Starting Monday, WFYL-AM (1180) signs on as News Talk 1180, a Fox News affiliate, from the grounds of the Jeffersonville Golf Club near Norristown. Programming starts at 7 a.m. with the local Barry Papiernik and picks up at 9 a.m. with two hours of Ingraham, last heard here on WNTP-AM (990). Savage will be heard from noon to 3 p.m. The station streams at www.1180wfyl.com (There is still no word of a new home in Philadelphia for Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck.)
This is the station that managed to get itself re-located Central PA. Interesting that instead of going with progressive talk, a field they'd have to themselves, they decide to dig even deeper down into the field of right-wing hosts. Maybe management spends too much time with people at the golf course. This would make WFYL the number four (after WPHT, WPNT and WNPV) wing-nut talker. Or maybe the station is still "brokered" and TRN, which distributes Ingraham and Dr. Weiner (Savage) is paying to play.

Interesting that WFYL never came up in any of our conversations about placing Hannity and Beck on a new affiliate. It wouldn't work very well for Hannity half of the year, but it would be solid for Beck. It sounds like TRN was willing to pay up to get Doyle and Laura back on, and Savage a daytime clearance in Philly (even if Savage's show will be a very stale 18 hours old by its noontime slot, and will only clear live about half the year. It still beats 3AM). Premiere/Clear Channel apparently didn't want to put up the bucks.

This is strictly about revenue. On a national basis, there's not much of a demonstrated audience for pure LibTalk, hence syndicators aren't ponying up the money to place those programs in uncleared markets. TRN knows it's easier to attract national buys to its popular programs with Market No. 8 in the clearance column.

Bet on it.

Does Fox 'News' not have exclusive affiliates in a market like most news services? WNPV & WFYL are about 10 miles apart. Seems strange if they were to drop WNPV's signal that covers the northern suburbs pretty well for the puny daytimer 1180 signal (poor even in eastern Montco.) unless WNPV is dropping them. Since parts of their lineup are non-right wing political shows (medical & sports talk), I'd like to see them go back to the apolitical AP network news.

Surprised also that Beck/Hannity didn't try for 1180. I guess TRN offered cash on the barrelhead to Langer.

One show that stays in the lineup isn't exactly conservative talk. The Union Edge also runs, at least for now, on WPYT-660 in Wilkinsburg (Pittsburgh), whose sale the FCC just approved.
