Austin radio boring?? Not hardly. And, playing it safe is not always bad, it brings consistency and a sense of community. KLBJ, KVET, KASE...they have all been around for a while and their formats are consistent and they are representative of the Austin culture, three "Austin originals"...Houston has NO original formats (except KRBE), and what they do have is not worth listening to. They speed up the music on all stations, and sometimes your not sure if you are listening to the original version or not. And not to mention, having an Oldies station like KXBT (let's hope UT decides not to purchase it) is something that Houston can't seem to get right. KHMX puts you to sleep, whereas KAMX plays an upbeat mix of songs that keeps you going. KODA vs KKMJ...no compare, Magic wins hands down. Austin radio is good...not the best, but FAR better than Houston.

Yes -- Austin Boring still. FYI, KVET is not the same KVET as it was a year or so ago. Kvet is hardly a original any more... KASE is more or less the same. I would still pick Corpus Market over any other market in Texas being the best radio market. It sure isn't Austin.

Corpus is probably better than the 111 market rank might suggest, because there are so many signals, but it's still mostly amateur hour, especially compared to something like Dallas.

Some people would argue - it is the "professionalism" - radio smoothed over by lawyers, corporations, political correctness, small focus group dictated playlists - that is what is wrong with radio. A few rough edges, local humans behind the board, playlists coming from listener requests, local content, somebody being themselves ____ the lawyers and corporate suits - that is what makes interesting, compelling listening.

That's why locally-owned, independent radio stations with large, unfocused playlist picked mostly by the jock and his regulars calling in on the hotline usually win in the marketplace.

Sorry but this thread is a joke. It really should be renamed as "if you don't like all of Houston radio, get a HD radio." They have a LOT more choices than Austin does or San antonio.

Absolutely - it is ridiculous and insulting to suggest somebody pack up and move just for a better selection of radio stations.

You are right - Houston's compelling and interesting formats are on HD-2. Unfortunately, even though I can see the Mo City towers from my house, HD still is unreliable and drops out occasionally all over the area as I drive. And that is with a Pioneer Supertuner and a whip antenna - one of the most sensitive setups you can put in a car. Nothing wrong with the setup - Bob FM 103.5 blasts in, as does a 98.7 from Victoria when I go South a bit. It is extremely annoying when an HD-2 goes out, you have to wait seconds for it to come back.

Are Houston stations purposely putting their best formats on HD-2 to drive HD radio sales?
 
When did they start running Commercials on 95.7 HD-2?

I wonder if anyone made an 8-track walkman? If they did make such a thing, then they hit their head on the toliet and came up with HD radio ;D said it was the next best thing. :D :D :D

Down at the country near Victoria, I got a dipole antenna hooked up on my HD Radio and I can pull in the missouri city almost all the time, nothing like analog, but nice when it does come in, normal weather conditions I can get 57-60db. 80 miles away.
 
There goes 98.9 for oldies KUT bought them out. How much worse can Austin radio get??? not much telling.

Actually - HD-2 listeners just donated a bunch of money to KSBJ specifically for their HD-2 format. I am surprised how many people there were.

Meanwhile, SiriusXM penetration for the new car market is at 66% and for the USED car market is at 47%. That's right, 47% of used car buyers who are offered satellite radio on a trial basis not only take it, but continue to subscribe once the trial period is up. Given the choice of HD or satellite, consumers have spoken.
