You've got a small town station — how do you compete in the 21st century?

One of the small operators I worked for in Indiana remarked upon a competitor's format change from country to classic hits:

"We will gladly take all of the country audience"

Our bread was buttered on our country stations, one hot country and one classic. Both of them had double digit share according to Eastlan ratings at the time.

Country came late to Ukiah. KUKI signed on in 1950, and was MOR until 1974, when it morphed into Adult Contemporary. KWNE signed on in 1968 as KLIL and was Beautiful Music. It switched to the syndicated MOR format "The Entertainers" in late '74. (https://www.worldradiohistory.com/h...age-0013.pdf#search="radio arts entertainers").

When KUKI added an FM, KKTU, in 1975, they went freeform with it.

Until 1976, the only Country in the market was half an hour of country music on KUKI at 7:30 weekday mornings, sponsored by the local Ford dealer.

In '76, KUKI ditched the freeform on FM, bought an automation system, signed up for Drake-Chenault's Great American Country and changed the call letters to KALF, with a logo that foreshadowed every "Bull" Country station today. As far as I know it's been Country ever since---changing only the call letters and programming providers.

As PD and morning guy at KUKI, I tried to get the Ford dealer to move its buy over to KALF, but they wouldn't budge.

owning a radio station nowadays is like starting to make revenue on a growing youtube channel, it's all about getting a 2nd income stream out of the 1st, youtube it's about ads, sponsorships, but MOST importantly your personal company ($wag & a Vision) okay i call that being a true SAAV, lol, that carries to probably how it was on radio in the first place but you get my point, sell sell sell Yo ! and good luck !
