Yes its a lineup change for SiriusXM between Z100 and the Dave Matthews outlet.

As part of a minor channel refresh taking place today, SiriusXM has moved iHeartMedia CHR “Z100” WHTZ New York to its streaming only package and has made Dave Matthews Radio a permanent fixture on the lineup.

Z100 was one of the two remaining iHeartMedia programmed stations on the satellite lineup remaining from XM’s 2001 deal with the company. A 2013 deal shrunk the arrangement to carrying just Z100 and 102.7 KIIS-FM Los Angeles on the service, but expanded coverage to remaining Sirius receivers. KIIS-FM remains on SiriusXM channel 11, while Z100 moves to the company’s streaming packages on channel 769.

Sort of useless, since you don't need to pay for Sirius to stream Z-100. It's already available for streaming on iHeartRadio. But a contract is a contract.

As I recall, iHeart was one of the original investors in XM back in the 90s. In exchange they received satellite distribution for some of their local stations long before anyone ever thought about streaming on the internet.
 
When I had SiriusXM in my car and actually drove places before the pandemic stopped all that, I can tell you I'd routinely hit my SXM preset button for Z100 when punching around to see what was on. I never pulled it up on the iHeart app though. That would be a much more goal-focused activity. That's one benefit radio (and satellite) still has over the streaming apps.

On another note I wonder how much the labels pay for those artist-specific streaming channels.

That's why WSIX was on there for so long. WLTW had a brief appearance when XM began as well.
 
It seemed redundant to have two IHeart CHR's on satellite radio.
I wonder how it was decided to remove Z-100, and leave Kiss from L.A,
 
I think a key reason is that KIIS-FM is the flagship station of On Air with Ryan Seacrest. Another possible reason is that it is the origin of iHeartRadio's KISS-FM brand, which is present in many cities around the country.

A group of several broadcast investors provided programming at the beginning of XM. Hispanic Broadcasting had 5 channels in the Spanish language, but those were not simulcasts of FMs but, rather, complete creations with playlists and production done for four in LA and one in San Antonio.

Which one was run out of San Antonio? I was a very early subscriber to XM and remember those channels. If i am remembering correctly, they had commercials.
 
The Z100 and 102.7 Kiss FM channels on SiriusXM are a simulcast of the FM stations. Therefore they play commercials.

For a number of years, the audio fidelity on channel 12 has been poorer than most of the other SXM music stations.

Years ago, when XM was an autonomous service, I remember the WHTZ, WLTW and KIIS channels having impressive audio fidelity, especially compared to all the other music channels on the service. They clearly were allocated extra bandwidth.

With the exception of The Blend, I am not at all a fan of how Sirius XM's pop music channels sound. The Pulse is unbearably boring, Hits 1 needs to dump Spyder Harrison (who belongs on the 70's or 80's channel), Pop2K hasn't sounded good in at least five years, and the fact the service lacks a Variety Hits channel on the birds is pitiful. Come to think of it, the service doesn't even offer an honest Adult CHR / Hot AC channel! The Pulse can at best be labeled Modern AC.

Which is why SiriusXM offers so many choices. And why iHeart owns several stations in NYC.

The BEST solution for people who want a certain kind of music is to make your own playlist. That option is always available and has been for more than 30 years.

I remember that, too. I figured that was because Clear Channel had XM by the short hairs -- CC had provided a crucial $75 million to get XM launched, so they were free to demand certain favors from XM to go along with the bandwidth they were handed. In time, Clear Channel's investment in XM lessened to the point that, IIRC, it totally divested some years ago, yet the two hit channels remained, albeit in lower fidelity. I have never seen an explanation as to why either WHTZ or KIIS is still part of Sirius XM. Maybe one of our insiders can venture a guess.

They play the top hits - youre probably old thats why you dont like it.

& since theyre basically always in the top 2 ny revenue they must be doing something right.
 
WSM's feed was on Sirius, not XM which had simulcast several Clear Channel-owned stations. WSM was gone from the satellite by the time of the Sirius-XM merger.

I prefer CHRs that include more rhythm crossover hits and feature a wider playlist overall. At least 85 percent of Z100's spins seem to come from about 15 songs, at least during the weekend. Is there so much music repetition during weekdays when people are listening at work?

Most of the music Z100 plays is so sanitized; reminds me of Radio Disney!
