Z105.3 now simulcasting on 105.7, where Alt 105.7 is now on HD2

Satellite Alternative

I know there are a couple of alternative music fans on here. Asking you all only - Do you actually tune into the FM dial for your Alt fix? With the exception of WEQX out of Vermont, all I listen to is XMU and Alt nation on Sirius.

My car radio never leaves AltNation. Maybe, just maybe, Lithium or XMU, but pretty steady on AltNation.

One common thing to the Alt format is it's more fractured than other formats. That type of genre works better on a platform where you can narrow-cast.

Totally. I have mentioned before the Alt tests I have seen show various sub-groups, each of which has less than total tolerance for the songs that another sub-group may like. It's as if there were three or more actual formats, but each would be very small.

Not seeing the logic in that statement.

Sure. There are some formats that get lots of listeners, but those listeners are not attractive to advertisers. Stations can succeed only by getting a listener group that appeals to potential clients.

Glad to see Alt 105.7 gone. Terrible station. I can only hope iHeart dumps 104.9 St. Louis, 103.3 Indy and 103.9 Dayton next!

Seeing WNDX in Indy (which is substantially better programmed than Rock 100.5, I might add) consistently whip Alt 103.3 in the ratings puts a smile on my face. :)

How can an alt station get high ratings? If an alternative station attracts lots of listeners, it is no longer "alternative", but mainstream. (Just an alt theory...)

EQX, definitely. 96.5 The Buzz in KC, but not so much for music discovery outside of Sonic Spectrum. More for the personalities.

A lot of non-comms. The Current, KEXP, KCRW depending on DJ and mood.

My tastes are often "alternative" but beyond what terrestrial stations program in my market offer, and I still prefer a knowledgeable DJ with the music. If those stations were local to me on FM, I'd tune in on FM.

There's very few commercial FM alternative stations that I think provide an interesting enough blend - I don't listen to any of the "Alt" brand stations from iHeart or Intercom. Alt 105.3 (KITS) had some great specialty shows with Aaron Axelsen, but after he was fired, there was no reason to tune in left.

In Atlanta, 98.9 (99X) and TOSOTR are the only ALT products I listen to over the air. 105.7 lost a button on my presets a long time ago. I'd say I listen to FM for ALT about 25% of the time, and Sirius XM (ALT Nation, Lithium, 1st Wave or XMU) 75%.

It's just like others have posted, I know I can hear the exact sub genre of ALT I want if I tune into a satellite channel. On FM, I might have to sit through something I don't want to hear for who knows how long?

I'd probably listen to TOSOTR more if I could pick up the signal better. It's hit and miss for me.

I now see the Indy station has added some harder rocking artists back into rotation (Korn, Godsmack, Breaking Benjamin, Crossfade, and others), and lo and behold, their ratings rebounded quite a bit this book!

Alt 105.7 didn't appeal to the hipsters because the music selections weren't adventurous. It didn't appeal to rock fans because the playlist featured too much sissy music. Just an all around LAZY job of programming by iHM.

It seems like 96.7 the Beat will move to 105.3 and 96.7 will be getting a new format. If you search 1053thebeat.com, it takes you to 96.7 the Beat's website. I am not a fan of this move personally if this is to be true.

I know this isn’t a credible source but there is a brand new Instagram page called real1053atl and with a logo similar to the beat. 105.3 is gonna be another urban station from the sound of it.

IMHO
105.3 would be a very good Urban signal. Programming it would be a challenge. I am sure that iHeart can VT it and put out a good product. But they will have promote it locally which is hard when your on air talent is not local.

How is 96.7 being programmed, sold, and promoted today? Sounds like it would be just sending the same programming to a different tower. They should up their game with a better signal, but they don't have to.

The question then becomes what to put on 96.7.

96.7 THE BEAT is now all voice tracked except afternoons after the massive iHeart layoffs last month or so. It basically sounds like every other iHeart urban station nationwide besides the major players in NY and LA. When they launched 92.3/96.7 The Beat, they did have billboards around town promoting the Breakfast Club.

How did the old WMAX 105.3 do, when that signal first moved in? They played 80s.
