Zakk & Jack, Indiana football coach get into heated discussion

Clueless response from the coach. Sounds like a real hothead who has no idea that the only national exposure his program can generate would be from this Indiana based show.

Now from a technical standpoint, zakk and jack's staff may have let those guys down a little by not distracting the coach a little or these guys talked up their intro way too long. I'm still shocked at the coach's reaction but let's say he already waited three or four minutes on hold through commercials and another couple of minutes intro, you can see how he might have a little chip on his shoulder. However, he should have taken that initial shot or two and moved on. Idiots all around on this one.

First time I listened to Zack and Jack for more than 15 seconds. Indiana has bad football, how about their horrible radio show

Here is what bothers me...
RADIO TOUGH GUYS! Oh so tough when you hang up... You don't hang up on him then try and talk tough. If you want to have a debate, then you don't hang up on a guest. Just bailing and hanging up is gutless.
So Kevin Wilson took offense to bashing his program... I don't blame him. Was he short and a-hole ish? Absolutely. But ask him two questions and get out OR make it a solid debate/segment. You don't bail when it gets hot... thats GUTLESS.

And who does Jack really think he is? Doesn't he have some underage kids to serve beer to or something? We work in an industry where so many people overvalue worth. Unfortunately Jack falls into this mix where he thinks he is much more important then he is...

You can't act like that as a college head coach. The dude has zero abilities to deal with the media. Expecting all media to act like the host of your local coaches show is just not going to happen. I do think Jack went way overboard, especially the threats of talking to IU cronies. I guarantee you the coach will be talking to the AD and publicist for IU about his inability to handle the most simple task in the world - go on the Zakk and Jack show - a chimp could almost waddle and scratch his way through an interview with those two. The fact he let those two get under his skin is ever more sad.

You don't remember one Robert Montgomery Knight?

I don't expect, or want any sports-talker to kiss a coach's a**, but this was ridiculous. And the coach should have been above the fray and not dropped down to the level of a couple of 4th-tier sports-babblers. He knew what he was getting into with that football program - the Detroit Lions of the Big Ten - he should be able to take the heat, which he will get almost consistently. And I say this as a Bloomington native and lifelong IU fan.

From the very few times I've heard Zakk and Jack, I've never been impressed. These guys are weak. If this is what passes for sports talk in Indy, they're in even worse shape than we are in Phoenix.

Oh yes, loved Bobby Knight and still do. Was he like that before his teams started winning though? My earliest memory of IU I believe was the Kent Benson era which of course was before ESPN and all the attention coaches now get. All I remember from that time was Coach Knight talking to some dude on Channel 4?? on his coaches show and always seemed so calm. Well that did not last long did it. For some reason on our cable in SW Ohio we received an Indianapolis station, it was cool though - Sammy Terry was awesome as was Cowboy Bob.

I wonder a little if Z&J did this for publicity. They had to know it would get under his skin. It worked, just got a mention on the DP show.

Knight was branded a nut-case almost from the day he arrived in Bloomington in 1971 - years before the chair-throwing incident or the flap with the cop in Puerto Rico. I was at an IU game that year - I think it was the 94-29 blowout over Notre Dame - when a large group of fans (probably students) starting acting up and chanting something nasty. Knight called a timeout, grabbed the PA microphone, and shouted (I'm paraphrasing since I don't remember the exact words) "HEY! This is Indiana University! We don't yell that kind of stuff here!" You could have heard a pin drop at Assembly Hall for about a minute before play resumed.

That was WTTV Channel 4. They were on cable all over Indiana and parts of western Ohio and eastern Illinois, mainly for IU and Purdue basketball. Never cared much for Sammy Terry (and I was definitely in the minority there), liked Cowboy Bob, but thought Janie was a bit (actually, a lot!) weird. When it came to the amount of local programming, they were probably second to WGN-TV in the midwest, if not nationwide.

Hilarious. Really, though I do think that Jack chose the wrong tack to take with the coach. He could have easily apologized (as insincere as it would have been) and quickly shifted to the positive. As in "Hey, coach, just having some fun--no harm intended. So we're all looking forward to greater things from Hoosier football. How's camp coming along?" It ain't that hard to do.

Then again, maybe Zack & Jack have been told by the programming wizards at CC/Indy to stir up controversy whenever they can. WNDE is getting crushed by 1070, so maybe they think going to war with IU's football coach will create some street buzz.

Re Channel 4/WTTV. Yeah, I grew up in Eastern Illinois and Channel 4 was our "Independent" station for decades. All these years later I recognize that watching WTTV on a regular basis gave me ties to Indianapolis that I never felt toward Chicago. F**k Da Bears. Go Colts!

Yeah, I always had a soft spot for the Baltimore Colts. Johnny Unitas was my favorite QB as a kid, even though I'm a lifelong Bear fan. What? You mean the Indianapolis Colts, with that guy Peyton Whatzisname that you see in all those commercials with his twerpy little brother? Oh, yeah, he's alright, too. I heard he got really lucky in that Super Bowl a few years back. ;D

Seriously, when I was growing up in the area (1955-73), the Colts were in Baltimore and Da Bears were our team. I really was a Unitas fan back then, except when the Colts were playing the Bears, of course. Go Bears!

Ha, ha! You're right--the Coats are unrelated to the Old Days in the midwest.

You may remember that through the fifties & sixties (at least) NFL games were pretty much limited to a Game of The Week and (IIRC) whatever the regionally closest team or teams might be. Seems to me that what we usually got was the Bears or Cardinals. But very few people really gave a shit about the NFL back then. MNF and ESPN made it what it is today.

Regardless, Chicago was too far away to visit frequently--and too hard to navigate. Indy was much closer and much more manageable. So for folks in my small town, Indianapolis was "The Big City.

I'm not old enough to remember the Cards at Comiskey Park, so it was Bear games on WISH-TV for us, although I do remember quite a few Cards games on CBS as well when they were in St. Louis - maybe as the doubleheader game. IIRC, WFBM/WRTV carried Bengals games when they started up. I don't remember which AFL team they carried before that, assuming NBC (and ABC before '65) had regional coverage.

At it again on this horrible show, yesterday and today Z and J were arguing openly whether Carson Palmer is an elite QB or not. Just uncomfortable radio to say the least, they argue like little kids instead of adults. Zakks voice is just awful, why is he on radio? I could see maybe as a DJ (definitely sounds like Dr. Demento) but not sports talk. I can't stand any of the other shows on in my market during my drive time so I am forced to listen to this.

So, as noted in the other thread, Zakk and Jack were given their pink slips right before Christmas, and Kevin Wilson still has his job.

So, merry Christmas Zakk and Jack. After acting like all-around douchbags for a year, you got to go home last week and tell your wives and kids that daddy is out of a job and there will have to be some lifestyle changes.

Sorry, tomficker, you backed the wrong horse in this race.
