WHIZ - The local heritage is moving west.

This is very hard to believe after working in the Zanesville Market myself. I never worked for WHIZ, yet I did work for Coshocton Broadcasting. If you have lived in the area, you would know what I mean. Zanesville is a very LOCAL town. They love their local scene, local stations and local media. Same in the area surrounding Zanesville....

There technically is not a ZANESVILLE market, however local media people referred to the following areas as being the ZANESVILLE market.

MUSKINGUM COUNTY - Located in the center of the market. Home of Zanesville
COSHOCTON COUNTY - Just north of Muskingum County
PERRY COUNTY - Southwest of Muskingum County
MORGAN COUNTY - South of Muskingum County

Ironically, I never heard anyone claim Gurnsey as part of the market. Hmmm...

This would leave the so called "Zanesville Market" with...
1240 WHIZ Zanesville Adult Contemporary
1560 WTNS Coshocton Country
92.7 WCVZ Zanesville Christian AC
99.3 WTNS Coshocton AC/HAC/Top40
100.9 WJAW McConnelsville Sports (more of a Marietta station, but its there)
105.9 WWJM New Lexington AC
107.3 WYBZ Crooksville Oldies

I heard that WTNS has a window to expand their signal to 6,000 watts. That for sure would cover Muskingum County (or most of it). I really think if WTNS went Adult CHR, it would do very well. Plus the area would really benefit from a Rock station. Not just Rock or Classic Rock but a WIOT of sorts....

Anyhow, just my thoughts.....

Not to be picky.. but WCVZ is actually licensed to South Zanesville.. unless you were stateing where the studios is at...

"Little town" signal is wanted by big city. Little town signal move. No more good signal for little town. Too bad.
WTNS won't take the place of WHIZ.
I think they're left with nothing but Class A's or B1's that can't make it to your clock radio.

WTNS

WTNS will always remain a Coshocton station and no one will ever take anyones place. However, I know that the station has a ton of potential. It just needs a little direction...

I wish Zanesville Media the best of luck...

Re: WTNS

The only commercial FM's with signal into Zanesville (besides soon to depart WHIZ) are WYBZ 107.3, and WCVZ, 92.7. WWJM's 105.9 signal is not bad--the transmitter site is on a high point, as well as WCMJ, 96.7. WTNS is too far north, even if it went up to 6.

Big 10-4 on that last thought, good buddy. :) What suggestions would you give WTNS management? My opinion? Too much clutter. Eliminate that, and it'll sound a *lot* better.

As for WHIZ, I noticed on the OAB site that they're looking for their morning man's replacement. <P ID="edit"><FONT class="small">Edited by Xnewsie on 12/09/05 05:31 PM.</FONT></P>

Re: WTNS

WTNS is the Coshocton Hometown Station. However, If they turned into more of a Hot AC/Top 40 all day instead of the mishmash Oldies, AC, Country, Hot AC, Top 40 that they do during the day.

I think Trevor Griffith took charge of the nights which sound very good for small market. I know it's not Coshocton Counties #1 format, but it does well in Tusc, Holmes and Muskingum at night. Maybe bump Trevor up to PD or something of the FM and leave the AM for Oldies and AC.

Of course this is my own opinion. But clean up the jingles, get a cheap but decent voice and either keep it WTNS or make it Star 99.3...

See: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM299442.html
for 60 dbu contour at present power. 3.4 kw required for a 6 kw A, but would not help all that much.
Contrast WYBZ coverage where 60 dbu covers most of Zanesville:
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM154376.html

As well as WWJM, which also throws a 60 dbu over the city:
http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM276003.html

See also: WCMJ http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM201975.html
WILE-FM: http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM203563.html

As well as WCLT (54 dbu shown):

http://www.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/FMTV-service-area?x=FM294642.html

As a practical matter, a 70 dbu signal would be needed in Zanesville for reliable service to home radios. However, with either 60 dbu or 54 dbu coverage of the city, a booster can be built in Zanesville that will provide this level of signal.

Could Newark Be Next?

Newark has a similar station in WCLT-FM. Any chance something like this happens there, too?

Never say never, but I doubt it. *If* Pricer sells WCLT somewhere down the road, it would be more plausible. My impression is the current regime is comfortable targetting the greater Newark area and southeastern Ohio.

However, one could speculate on a new format if there was a move to C-bus. After all, WCOL has held sway with the country format for years, so a head-to-head battle seems unlikely...but I've been wrong before. This is all assuming interference with adjacents is a moot point. Any thoughts?

WCLT-FM kinda has a sweetspot when it comes to their current signal, they reach into Columbus and also do very well in the Zanesville Area from what I have been told...

I dont see them moving under current ownership, heck they pull a higher arb rating in Columbus with their present signal that some of the Columbus stations with sticks closer to Columbus...

99.7 WBZX keeps 100.3 WCLT-FM from moving west. I believe I was told once that WCLT could move west a couple of miles, requiring a new tower, which wouldn't be a cost-effective proposition.

WCLT won't be going anywhere. Newark is not Columbus, but it is a good sized city. Plus WCLT does well in Columbus and all the way east to I-77. Why screw up a good thing?

Hey somebody update me on WWJM...I worked there years ago....morbid curiosty

Last time I heard "mix 105.9 WWJM in New Lex" they where running a satellite AC/Hot AC type feed with Bob and Sherri in the mornings, Pam or someone for middays and Matt and Romona in the afternoons (all 3 shows from Jefferson Pilot down in the caronlinas) have not heard them in about 6 months though so I couldnt tell you what their up to this second, they do some local sports too I think.

To be precise, 107.9 The Link in Charlotte. One time CC Columbus programmer Neal Sharpe went down there and along with him went some Columbus talent. BTW, Jefferson Pilot Communications is now Lincoln Financial Media. http://www.lincolnfinancialmedia.com/

That's right Dave, it was late and I didnt have a chance to dig up more info, was just going on memory... another thing about 105.9, from my understanding speaking with various people, they have one of the nicest setups, digital exciter, stl etc... for a small market station, sadly the stuff from 107.9 comes off a KU satellite and from my understanding is very compressed and has artifacts etc in it (or did the one time I listened).

In addition to Bob and Sheri and Matt and Ramona, they recently added The Cooper Lawrence Show, also from Lincoln Financial Media/Dial Global, weeknights from 7-10. The rest of the time they air Dial Global's Bright AC format. There's nothing local on that station right now, everything comes from Dial Global off the bird.

When the WHIZ move goes through, it will be interesting to see how the remaining stations make a play for their audience. One wonders if WYBZ (satellite oldies, local morning show) will change formats to AC to capitalize on the gaping hole that will be left in the market. They already have a lot of local cred from their agressive marketing and community involvement, a format change would be a logical next step for them.

"Let their staff go"? Who was left? Their entire format is voice tracked from Columbus, including thier mornig show which is the previous day's morning show on The Fibber. Maybe they hired someone just so they could fire 'em for Christmas.
