WFHG of the 70's

What happened to these WFHG DJs of the 1970's? Is my memory correct on these airshifts and names?
- Joe Kelly (morning DJ?, 6-9AM?). Did Dr. Don replace Kelly?
- Was there a ladies show from 9-10AM? What was her name?
- Coffee Head Hagey (Bill Hagey no doubt, 10A-12N?)
- Reggie Neal (Now on XBQ?, 12-3PM?)
- Gary Meadows (3-6PM?)
- Bruce Clark (Is this the same one that is back with BB as a PD? 6-10PM?)
- Mason Lee Dixon (10PM-2AM?)
- Silent Sam (was that a board op that followed Bruce Clark?)

Does anyone have any other airshift lineups or DJs from the 70's?

How long did WFHG remain Top 40?
 
Gary Meadows passed away a few years ago of a massive heart attack while at work. He was one of my favorite jocks of his time.
 
Reggie Neel works on WXBQ from 10-2 or 10-3 and has for the better part of the last 30 years. My wife is good friends with him. He seems like a classy gentleman and a consummate professional in "this thing of ours" (sorry, I like that phrase. the mafia uses it, but I think it works for radio, because once you're bitten by the bug, it's hard to get out of the business.)
Sorry that I can't be of much help about the history of the Bristol stations and Citadel (formerly Tri-Cities Radio Group/Bloomington Broadcasting). I know a lot about Holston Valley Broadcasting's on-air line-up history from the 80's to today, but that's about it.
 
I worked at WFHG in '74-'75...Richard Kent. They had me on a part-time, 7 day a week split shift. Does anyone know what happened to Danny Williams? Any info would be much appreciated. He was production manager, did on-air fill-ins, and hosted "980 Comment" after the 6PM news. Also: Robert E. Lee (Larry Smith)? And mid-day man Bob Morrison? Mason Lee Dixon (Wayne Summers) left in late '74 for Spartanburg, SC. I drove him down there, and never heard from him again. He took a job at WORD, if memory serves me correctly. Evening jock Bill Cheney and I were good friends while I was there. A few years later, while living and working in Louisiana, I picked up R&R one day and read about his passing. Bill taught me much about radio...

I grew up listening to WFHG - thanks for the memories! They broke away from Top 40 sometime around the early 80's with the rise of FM. WFHG, along with night listening to WOWO caused me to fall in love with radio and got me into the business. Hmmmm. Wonder if I could sue them now?!
 
YES, THE MEMORIES.

And what about listening to the Chicago powerhouse WLS and Dick Biondi.

And WCFL in Chicago, WLAC in Nashville, WABC, WNBC & WCBS out of New York and WLW out of New Orleans.
 
I never worked for FHG but did work for KYX/Paducah KY, 75-78 which of course was a carbon copy of FHG, spliced to death songs and every one sped up, courtesy of Bill Hagy using the gralab clocks that timed everything to within 1/8 of a second. It was guarenteed to make you sound as tight as it gets. Our version of Couldn't get it Right/Climax Blues Band was 1:59!!!

Bill Chaney was the PM drive jock, was THE part-time guy from 17 to 19 years oldb and when Bill passed, 7/7/77, yes...that's right, 7/7/77 I finally had the chance to go full-time 7 till mid at a huge $150 a week.

It was a great formula that won in the Tri-Cities, Charleston WV & in Paducah. I actually ended up working in Johnson City, for a very brief moment in 81 @ QUT as PD age the yound age of 23. Good memories, well except for Bruce Clark...Kidding Bruce.
 
Ah, yes, those GraLab clocks and edited songs, all designed to get the maximum of 22 minutes of spots into each hour! Add to that the 5 minutes of ABC News, and you had to wonder -- how did they make it sound so good??? Hagy had cut Clapton's "I Shot The Sheriff" down to about 2:20. Dr. John's "Right Place, Wrong Time" was less than 2 minutes. I had forgotten about Bill Chaney's move to Paducah -- thanks for bringing that back. I had returned from Louisiana to east Tennessee in '81, and was doing middays at "Easy Rock 16 WJSO" while you were at WQUT. Small world...

Larry Smith (Smitty) drove trucks for years and is now retired. Bob Morris (my dad) worked as a cell tower technician for many years, and now lives in central VA near my siblings. He and I just had a great conversation about his memories at the station, as well as his earlier days ay WKPT.
