What? Was the X Files movie sold out so you had to give up your seat for the first time since it opened?

Ever hear of punctuation?

Wow.

Hasn't this station been having problems like this for several years?

Of course, if he has ignored the fine, maybe he's right..the government WILL be out to get him..

For years now, this station has had these events to occur:

1. Many different owners. (Their most recent would include Rep. Earl Hilliard/Trenholm State College in Montgomery, Michael Bulter and Greg Meadows)
2. Many different formats. (Top 40, Oldies, Urban, Classic Country, Political Talk and Sports)
3. On the air for a while and then off again. (During the 90s and early 2000s)
4. Many different call letters. (WIQR, WRNB, WSKN and back to WIQR)
5. Many different locations throughout Prattville and Montgomery. (Highway 82, County Road 4 in Prattville, during their Top 40, Oldies and Classic Country days and West South Blvd, Mobile Highway and Lee Street in Montgomery, during their Urban days and now on East Main Street, for the past few years now.)

I've been keeping up with this station, since the early 80s. Prior to around 1982, I wasn't too familiar with this station.  I was just in the 4th grade (1982) when I got my first portable radio and discovered this station, while surfing the dial.  That radio also had a TV tuner built in.  Man I wish I had that radio still but oh well! That's the good old days.

Whew! Just remembering all that is a mouthful indeed.

The first time I ever remember hearing WIQR was back in '84 on my way back to Birmingham from a family trip to Gulf Shores (I was about 16 at the time). We had stopped off just north of Montgomery for gas, and I remember finding WIQR while I was looking/listening for the other Montgomery AMs; it was programming an adult contemporary format back then. It's good to see the WIQR calls make their way back to the station, too bad the station itself is in such bad shape, though. I do remember the station being owned by Rep. Earl Hilliard, who used to own WJLD in Fairfield. IIRC, there were some allegations he stole some equipment from the station after he sold it, don't know whatever became of all that.

Several years ago, I happened to be listening to the last few minutes of their morning talk show. As they went to top of the hour news and next show, they had a say, very, passionate post-mortem all with the mic still on. This went on for at least ten minutes. I may have been their only listener that day, but that was awesome. BTW this station is still silent, but I think the 3 towers are still up along County Road 4.

The Towers are there, but are not operational, the lights no longer come on at dusk.

The new FCC commish is allegedly a fan of AM. Dust off the old LPAM proposals for testing, but beyond the 1620-1700 channels.

Let a group who applied for an LPFM have a 30-watter for Prattville at 1350 or 1360. Then let East Montgomery have a similar facility at 1400 or 1410.

Earl Hilliard had a deal to buy the AM station in Sumiton some years ago, and decided to punt on that deal. Not sure what the backstory is on that one.

As for WIQR, I have come to the conclusion that most of these little AMs in the deep south are functionally obsolete. If you have the real estate, that's something of value if the station fails, but as I recall, WIQR is located adjacent to a landfill. That can't be good for property values.

The last time I heard WIQR, it was some years ago. They were airing a continuous loop of someone in station management, on some sort of a diatribe concerning some nasty local dispute as to why they could no longer air high school sports or something. I listened in part amazement, and part disbelief.

To me, Montgomery seems a bit provincial. I've had opportunities there, taken a look, and reconsidered. If someone were to fix up WIQR, they would absolutely need to be from the area.

Some of these stations should turn in their permits and not return to the air to free up the noise on the AM band. The are many existing AM's that would benefit from this.
