P.I. FIM-71 on e-Bay

It's three years out of calibration. Ask P.I. what the calibration chrge is, figure the shiopping to and from P.I., and add a couple hundred for anything that might be not quite up to snuff. Subtract this from thr 3000 they'd sell it for, and offer that amount.

I realize they are very expensive new, but is this a reasonable used price? It seems high....

$3800 for an FIM-71, even if out of cal and needing a few parts, is a steal.

I paid $300 for mine, ten or fifteen years ago. Calibration and repair was about $300-400 more. The guy was getting out of the business (to start driving a truck) and needed rent money. That, and the meter movement had popped off the pivot, so he thought it was toast.

Latest price, before it was discontinued, was well over ten grand.

... and why did it wind up in a Pawn Shop?

Maybe it's stolen property?

Maybe a broadcaster than went under or in dire straits?

But who would know what it is in a pawn shop? They might just think it's some odd looking radio.

Have you seen one at Dayton or other Hamfests? What was the price?

Even abandoned transmitter sites are raided by radio people who would know that it was valuable.

PI Field Strength meters have always been pricey, but I think that one is definitely on the high side for the used market. There is one on E-Bay for less than $2K: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Potomac-In...=2740302832723e13aa4eceb7458d8609503931f670c0

As Frank mentioned, it is unusual to find one of these at a pawn shop. The risk is, if it's stolen, that someone reported the theft to Potomac Instruments so if someone sent it in for calibration, PI would notify the owner/local authorities. You could be out three grand and have to give the meter back.

I recall seeing that guy's e-bay ads a few years ago (same photos). I think they were originally GSA Auctions surplus, from the closing of FCC Field Offices, and some upgrading of their equipment inventories.
