My point is that wouldn't it make sense to program a station to a larger minority, rather than the latest group of immigrants to come in. Boston needs an African American station.
It seems kind of stupid to fill up the dial with more foreign language programming that already exists

Maybe you have a point. The unlicensed station that exists now is Haitian
If you think that money for an urban station is wasted, why don't you put up the money for a new station for Haitians. Good luck

Wow, that’s going to be one of the most powerful AM stations in the whole world!
Boston has perhaps the largest Haitian-American community in the United States, maybe even bigger than South Florida.
But it's concentrated in two different parts of the metropolitan area.
One, in Dorchester, Hyde Park, and Milton, will get a good signal from the new WMSX 24 hours a day.
The other is in the Cambridge/Somerville area, and while those areas should get the new WMSX signal fine during daytime hours, they won't get it after sunset.

FWIW, after the Haiti earthquake, local radio reports described the Boston Haitian community as the third largest in the US.

Does anyone know whether WMSX is testing with its full daytime power of 610W? As far as I can tell, I finally heard it on my car radio, which has reasonably good sensitivity on both AM and FM. The station was on 1410 and was playing unannounced jazz music. The frequency and the program content were consistent with what other posters have said they heard. The signal was very close to non-existent--a good deal worse than I had expected--and I hadn't expected much. The FCC often requires AM stations that are testing new or improved facilities to operate at 25% of the power shown in their CPs. From the extremely weak signal, I would say that it is likely that WMSX was running 152.5W or maybe even less. I live in Arlington Heights, perhaps as much as 20 airline miles from Readville, although the 20-mile distance is just a guess.

I exchanged e-mail with Alex Langer and he reports 1410 is at full power.
Time to get out the 'ol FIM (field-intensity meter). If what I heard is full power, there should be ample evidence that going to 1 kW-D (which is all that the Valcom whip can take) should not cause prohibited overlap with any other station proposed or licensed on 1410 or any frequency from 1380 to 1440. OTOH, if the dreadful reception here is the result of a problem along only a few radials, an increase to 1 kW could still be a no-go.

When we bought WAZN (then WSRO) from Alex Langer, the station was using that same (?) whip antenna mounted on a truck bed, up a steep hill, by the water tower in Hudson.I remember that day well - the mosquitoes had me for lunch! We got the 5kw transmitter (now located at one of our other company-owned stations) as part of the deal, along with a small amount of other gear.
Up a steep hill... You've described the old Fitchburg St site. My understanding is that the City of Marlboro wanted the WSRO land and WSRO shortly moved to a temporary site in Hudson (next town north of Marlboro). I was under the impression that Langer still owned WSRO 1470 when the Tx site was moved to a temporary site in Hudson. I tried to find the tower while I drove around near the Marlboro-Hudson line. Never found it. If your chronology is correct, I was looking in the wrong place.
