WSRS going downhill

So I've noticed a lot of things happening with 96.1 WSRS in Worcester. Until recently, this seemed to be a station that was rarely brought up on the boards. But it seems like a lot of the staff is being let ago, and they also seem to be adding more and more syndicated programming. At least they have their own morning show, but now with Jana on midday and Tom Holt gone, I wonder what's gonna happen. They seem to have tweaked their weekend lineup as well. They had Jim Brickman on Sunday morning, but moved it to Saturday. Oh and let's not forget Delilah. She's basically the "queen of nighttime radio" or whatever she's called. I'm sure everyone just loves listening to her. Tom Kent's Lovin' Life Livin' the 80s I have to say isn't too bad, and I kinda like the jingles.

However, there is one syndicated program I'm glad they added. The American Top 40 (80s) with Casey Kasem. Of course, this is an old show, and was one of the only syndicated shows around back then, and I always loved listening to it. Casey's soothing voice, so many interesting facts about the songs and artists, and of course the Long Distance Dedications. I do remember listening to other countdown shows such as Rick Dees, Dick Clark, and even Leeza Gibbons used to have one, but they just did not match up.

Though I have to say it's amazing that so many people are bringing up WSRS. I remember years ago, it used to get pretty significant listenership in my area (metrowest), maybe just as much, if not more, than Magic 106.7. But now, it seems like all people ever listen to is 106.7. I think in some parts of metrowest, WSRS even has a stronger signal than Magic.

Just to clarify, Tom Holt is the only employee who was let go. Heidi West left on her own.

Delilah's also been on the station since the late 90's, she's been on the station longer than any other personality! (Of course, Delilah was a jock in Boston in the late 80's early 90's, on WSSH and on WVBF.)

WSRS has slipped though... once the guaranteed top station in Worcester, they now regularly lose to Boston stations in their own market. Believe it or not, they've been losing share to Hot 96.9!]. The morale in the building is so low that it's a contributing factor... the PC programming doesn't help either.

I'd second that observation... WSRS was THE office/waiting room station in Framingham/MetroWest in the late-90's/early-00's. Any cheap clock radio can pick up the 96.1 signal in this area just as well as 106.7. I think they may have had a billboard on the Pike around Exit 12, and did a number of remote appearances out this way. They've certainly retreated a bit, and perhaps people in MetroWest like identifying with bustling Boston a little more than, well, Worcester.

I hate reading crazy predictions, so I'll call this an observation: WSRS is on the slide, Boston all-of-a-sudden loves country music, and Worcester County has always loved country music. What if?

I have never been a big fan of WSRS but I am surprised that Clear Channel is purging this station while pretty much leaving the AM side intact except for the fact they blew out the News Department a while ago and now use the Clear Channel canned local news from New York State.

Most of the CC AM stations in mid-size markets like Worcester are syndicated beyond morning drive while WTAG is still live & local in AM and PM drive with producers as well. Even WHJJ in Providence is local only in morning drive.

If I'm not mistaken, WSRS is still the top billing station in Central Massachusetts so I would think that the revenue would be sufficient to keep a live and local PM drive personality on air. Could CC be holding the line on the FM side to keep the heritage AM station as local as possible? I would think there would be a significant backlash from the community if they were to drop Jordan Levy to go syndicated in PM drive.
