Two new AM logs last night, Labor Day 2013

Got two new logs on Labor Day last night. Both are really GOOD logs! From Marysville, WA.

2135 PDT - 1060 KGFX Pierre, SD; classic country under CKMX and in the null of CKMX; ID "Your classic country station, KGFX", later taking over CKMX for a few minutes! NEW #480, 1kw, 1065 miles! Only my second South Dakota log on AM (the first was 810 KBHB Sturgis)

2140 PDT - 1050 KEYF Dishman, WA; standards // KSHO 920, America's Best Music ID; ID "AM 1050 the Key". NEW #481, 260w night, 223 miles. Wanted station off the list now. Only my second to last WA needed, now the only WA needed to clear the state is KRSC 1400 Othello.

Also heard - 1150 standards (KSEN-MT?), 1500 KSTP-MN strong, UNID 1280 with Mumford and Sons "I Will Wait" (but could have been talk show bumper music, it was 2125 PDT), 780 WBBM way under KKOH with news, unid 1450 Regional Mexican (prob KWEI-ID, needed), plus checking 1570 I found KCVR-CA and XERF-COAH both with weak to fair signals. Also 710 with SS which if not for it fading, could have // 5025 Radio Rebelde. Under KIRO.

P.S. Looking east on 1570 I found several threshold carriers E and ESE. Perhaps some of these are flea-power stations, but I'm not sure. With CKMW off, it makes it easier to try to get flea power from back east. I'd love to get either KPIO or KBCV this year. Both are needed and I heard religion one time on this frequency so it CAN happen!

The band seemed to be in pretty good shape last night despite all of the lightning here in the Portland area. I got a station on 1500 with a foreign language, sounded Asian. Any ideas?

That's KSJX San Jose, CA. I heard that as well, strong at times, but then it completely faded and KSTP took over with a fair to good signal from Minneapolis.

Congratulations on your great new catches. The possibility of R. Rebelde is intriguing. And that would be my guess as to what it was you were hearing. The reason it intrigues me is because "the Cuban chorus" has been a very tough catch for me here at home in the Chicago area. Even though it's easy when I travel to the east and south, and I've also heard it north and west of here. Of course my home QTH being 20 miles from WGN's tower doesn't help matters.

But that wouldn't be as formidable as being where you are....much farther away and having to pull it out from underneath KIRO.

W7PAT, your foreign language station on 1500 is probably KSJX, San Jose -- especially if the language sounds Asian.

Overnights I often hear them with a lot of Vietnamese talk by a man and a woman, bearing N-S, the opposite of KSTP.

I've also heard a station from Mexico City on 1500, but that was two years ago, during an aurora, right before 5 a.m.
