suitable "talk radio" alternative to KTAR/KFYI?

Is 960AM the only suitable alternative to 92.3 and 550? I cannot listen to either anymore - mid-days on 92.3 is fingernails on a chalkboard with Kari's incessant tsk-tsk'ing & lecturing, and I gotta steer clear of 550 around 9/11 anniversary time when the troofers come out - I gotta say, I really like the syndicated 'America Now' w/ Andy Dean - he sounds like Doogie Howser, Junior Talker mixed with "The Daily Show." Sad say when Salem - whose hourly news script reported the recent "Sum Ding Wong" TV anchor faux pas as "a play on Asian names" - can snag more entertaining talkers than both Bonneville & CC. Just sad. I never thought I'd skip 92.3 entirely some days. Of course, I'm not a soccer mom who likes being lectured at, so I'm outside their demo.

There is 1100 and 1480. I got 550, 960, 1100, 1230, and 1480 on my car AM presets. I flip through about 3 times a day and get the same old stuff. 550 is going to have a gold bug conference at their studios and 960 is going to have a "ask a Jew" (their words, not mine ) event in Sept. So I guess Gold and "Jews" are of interest for the talk radio folk? Interesting.

Interesting that 91~Five was omitted from the list of alternatives to KTAR/KFYI. Guess their lack of yelling, screaming and the same talking points over and over just doesn't cut it for the majority of mouth breathers.

As a Jew? Jews are so intertwined in our society now, so many integrated through multiple generations of mixed marriages, some practicing one of at least three distinguishable branches and some not practicing at all, spanning all different social and political viewpoints, to think that there is a lockstep answer to any question, “ask a Jew” should be really just “ask your neighbor”. Unless it is specifically about an agreed-upon objective point about religion, one is likely to find a wide variety of answers.

Actually, if KJZZ played cooler music when they're not on NPR schedule - something other than their "jazz" (no Zappa? no Captain Beefheart?) - I would listen to 91.5 more frequently. I love NPR's weekend programming, the puzzle guy, some of their newer shows. But the locally scheduled music? Meh. So, the omission was only partially intentional. I knew someone would call me on it.

If KJZZ played Zappa and Beefheart, I'd listen every day. NPR is good at long stories, radio journalism, but I can only take so much. KKNT is terrible, the news casts now sound like they are done from a closet with a few cans and string to transmit, just awful. Kari is very annoying, it made a lot of sense when she said she worked for Grant Woods, I can't handle her on the radio, she grates my nerves. 1100 is the whacko channel 1480 is the ultra left channel and 550 is the ultra right channel.

Talk radio just stinks. I find that BBC radio over the net is much more satisfying.

Good call indieradioguy, America Now w/Andy Dean is a pretty good program. I don't know Doc, NPR has some nice features but in very small doses or they start to sound like Saturday Night Live's version of NPR.

That "ask a Jew" stuff is the weird world of am 960 I guess Maybe they will have Babara Stresand and Henry Kissinger? I have 91.5 on my FM presets, I go Ipod for the music however.

Not really sure how 91.5 made its way onto a thread about "talk radio" (KJZZ/NPR has never been "talk radio" of the host/listener call-in type of programming). I just wanted some of the suits at Bonneville & CC to know that their daily programming is so bad I can't even listen for Detour Dan's updates anymore. Don't care. If there's an accident or detour, I'll find out myself. Give me tinnitus over BSJ and Kari and Dumb and Dumber. "Voice of Arizona" my foot. The Purity Products infomercials on BOTH 550 & 92.3 have more gravitas.

You obviously never listened to Talk of The Nation on KJZZ during its 12 year run. Or Diane Rehm. TOTN's replacement doesn't take calls; it's a news magazine. But once you get beyond the lack of hack hosts* (and the quivering voice of Rehm who sounds like she may keel over during the next break) you'll find that NPR's talk programming leaves the AM shows in the dust. No wonder NPR beats the AM stations in the money demo in several dayparts.

*okay, Juan Williams was a hack on TOTN. Couldn't host his way out of a paper bag with directions.

In a number of Top 10 markets, NPR does very well: KQED beats KGO in San Francisco (and El Rusho's station); WAMU is #1 in Washington D.C.; and WBUR is the #2 news/talk in Boston. KJZZ 91~Five is a good alternative to the blabbermouths on 5~Fifty and 92~Three. Add their 6+ share to KTAR & KFWhyEye's, and news/talk pulls a 10 share in Phoenix. As far as KKNT goes, they were beaten by Lumberyard 14~Forty's 0.1 share. YIKES!!

But when it's ten pm and you wanna hear the news before you drift off-KKNT does it better than the rest. Andy Dean is hip and hilarious, I'm really going to miss his Anthony Wiener updates:D

But surely there will be a lot of mileage from the Assad/Bruno/Borat bits. Assad's got chick music on his iPod? Who knew? :)
