WNAK 105.9 INDIAN LK. WHY?

A Pennsylvania based company; Smith and Fitzgerald Partners have a CP to build an FM station in tiny Indian Lake, NY. It will be on 105.9 and will be known as WNAK. Located in Hamilton county with a population of 5300 total, this station has the potential of reaching at best 1500 year around potential listeners. Somewhat more in the summer months with vacationers. How could anyone expect to be sucessful in a community that had its only full-line grocery store close, and not much opportunity for full time work unless you work for the government, and those jobs are few and far between? As far as business is concerned, there are 2 convienience stores, a small hardware store, 3 or 4 restaurants, a couple of auto shops and not much more. Probably some form of satellite programming will be used, but you still have the capital equipment costs, along with engineering, power, etc. This just does not make sense to me.

Take a ride up Route 28. From North River to Blue Mountain Lake, it is slim pickings on the radio dial. AM and FM. Then, take the ride on Route 30. From Lewey Lake to Blue Mountain Lake there is almost nothing other than WGY, with canned programming that is just slightly better than noise.

Anything would be a help to a community that has been underserved forever.

Clearly, there will be nothing other than a tower and dog house in Indian Lake, and it won't be a license to print money.

I've been lurking with interest on the forum for some time. Just registered so that I could offer my first observation: WNAK 105.9 is very much on the air in Indian Lake. I frequent the general area and have been listening for several weeks when I'm there. Right now all music and no commercials all the time, with occasional station IDs. My favorite so far is "conveniently located in the middle of nowhere, this is WNAK 105.9". That kind of sums up the area very well.

Disclaimer: I'm not a radio techie, just an interested party who discovered this site and is having a whole lot of fun reading the forum. Thought someone might be interested in the update.

I was in the Old Forge area during Labor day and as a DXer I like to scan the FM band whenever I travel. On 105.9 I remember receiving a weak W290BX, a translator for 900 WBRV. Not sure if WNAK could make it that far seems like the mountains would kill its signal.

I'd like to do a band scan from my location in the ADKS near Blue Mountain Lake. I'm not sure if there are rules you must follow to make the scan legitimate. I'll read on and learn and see if perhaps I can contribute.
I do know that on FM I get more and stronger signal from points east in Vermont, New Hampshire, and even Maine than I do from New York.

'Cause Indian Lake is the scene you should make with your little one,
Keep it in mind if you're lookin' to find a place in the summer sun...
