Hotel TV Report: Noblesville, Indiana

Good evening,

I am writing this evening from a Super 8 hotel in Noblesville, Indiana. I'm on night two of a road trip, and having made it to the hotel earlier than anticipated, took some time to look at the lineup. Unlike other lineups I've seen lately, which I did not feel the need to post, this one is worthy of a post here I believe.

So the TV is an analog CRT with bad color and each channel has a label. However, the label almost never lines up with the content of the channel. There is a little lineup card on top of the TV which looks to be correct. Below are the channels, the actual programming observed, and then in quotes, what the label says.

Some of the channels were skipped but I checked and some did have labels. I've included those with N/A as the network.

2 CNN "WTBS"
3 Weather Channel "CSP2"
5 WISH (CBS) "ABC"
6 N/A "ABC"
7 WRTV (ABC) "ACTS"
8 N/A "CBS"
9 TBS "TBN"
10 WXIN (FOX) "FOX"
11 HLN "HN"
12 WTHR (NBC) "NICK"
13 N/A "NBC"
16 TNT "TNT"
17 WGN America "UPN"
18 N/A "MMT" (Not sure; it was bouncing around due to the lack of signal, I'm pretty confident the first letter was not C, but not sure.)
20 WNDY (My) "NICK"
21 USA "TSN"
22 Black "ME-U" (Guide says MTV)
23 Discovery "CNN"
24 N/A "FX"
25 Nickelodeon "NICK"
26 Bloomberg (Scrambled) "BCC"
28 ESPN "ESPN"
29 Not subscribed "ESP2" (Guide says ESPN2)
30 HBO "HBO"

Things that jump out at me:

No WTTV (CW and historic local TV station), WFYI (PBS), or WIPB (PBS).

I hit one in Cary, NC and Greensboro, NC recently that were distinguished by having a very full cable lineup augmented by all of the digital subchannels in the market being available as well. Enjoyed access to Antenna and ME-TV away from home.

Now that's a crappy lineup! No PBS is a major loss for a cable lineup - there are many travelers that like public television.

I never got to go to any motels this year. Last year the only one I was at was that Hampton Inn near Portland with the DTA DirecTV box and dozens of HD channels, and all of the locals.

And only ONE ESPN, or two if they actually "subscribed" to The Deuce? Shocking for a motel cable lineup nowadays--where's the full Lodgenet package of at least 4 ESPN's like in most other hotels?

I was in a Red Roof in Columbus two weeks ago with Lodgenet and they only had the two ESPNs. I don't often see four unless the property is subscribing to cable or Dish/DirectTV.

@ Trip: That sounds an awful lot like the lineup I got at the Wyngate By Wyndham in August of 2010. That was right at the Rockville Road (US Route 36 West) exit off of I-74/I-465. My TV also had those outdated labels (in red!), exactly how you described them. I never received WTTV-TV (CW) channel 4 of Bloomington either, come to think of it. I'm certain I posted that line-up here somewhere, as I had this laptop with me on that trip.

By far, the best single hotel cable lineup I ever had was at a Country Inn & Suites on Donnelson Pike in Nashville, just off of I-40, close to BNA (airport) as well. It was the week before I visited Indianapolis. The room had a 32" Sanyo LCD HDTV, same remote and all like the 26" Sanyo I had here at the time. The analog lineup quality left something to be desired. However, the TV's QAM tuner worked just fine. I got all of the major locals in HD just fine. The TV had no converter on it, either. :)

Obviously that TV hasn't been updated at least since the Clinton administration:eek:! "ME-U" is Mind Extension University, a channel which rebranded as Knowledge TV in 1998 and whimpered out of sight in 2001. And "ACTS" is the current day Hallmark Channel; ACTS changed their name to Faith and Values in 1993, then Odyssey in 1996.

A few more things jump out at me Trip....

* All the channels set aside for NICKELODEON (Of all channels)

* NO Fox News Channel (You would think there would be in a rural place like that)

* All the "N/A" channels (Did the guide tell you what that meant?)

I think it's pretty safe to say that hotel doesn't subscribe to LodgeNet (If it did, the lineup wouldn't be as disorganized)

Cheers & 73 :)

Missing are CW, MNT, high-profile independent (KTVK). Not a bad lineup, overall.

The non-existence of KASW on DirecTV (At least on this lineup) will likely change once Gannett takes control of the station

Cheers & 73 :)

I think the FCC approve Gannett-Belo, but not the transfer of licenses in Phoenix and St. Louis to Sander (Gannett SSA). Those will have to be spun off to completely separate operators.

Hearst could give WMOR to Gannett and form a duopoly with WTSP and gained KTVK and KASW in Phoenix and KMOV in Saint Louis.

Umm......Could you please explain to us WHY either company would EVEN CONSIDER this ?? *PERPLEXED*

Cheers & 73 :)
