Old Houston stations

I remember after KFMK signed off, and before it signed back on as oldies. KZEW was easy to receive all over Houston for a week or so.
In their incarnation as an oldies station, I remember one of the DJ's brought his daughter Mandy to the station, and she was actually quite good on the air. One week, Uncle Johnny didn't show, and Mandy was on her own. She was ready!

I listened to the KFMK flip but can't remember the specific date. I do remember that it was in 1991 and think around April. Hope that helps. If you know how to contact Lee Jolly, he may be able to give you a more specific time frame... he was one of the morning show DJ's, but abruptly sent packing when Radio One made the change.

It was Anchor Media that made the flip, IIRC. RO didn't acquire 97.9 until many years later.

Radio One is a fairly new owner of KBXX. Cook Inlet owned it when it flipped from KFMK to KBXX. Clear Channel bought it a couple years later. If I remember correctly, Radio One got it from Clear Channel after the Clear Channel bought AMFM. The AMFM deal put Clear Channel well over the ownership caps, and they decided to keep most of AMFM's cluster while getting rid of the existing cluster except for KHMX and KTBZ, though they let the 107.5 signal home to KTBZ go.

Thanks for the memory jog. Probably confusing it with KLDD in DFW which was Anchor Media around that time.

I do remember hearing an interview with Lee Jolly a few years after the flip (as a guest of Roger Gray on 97 Talk, IIRC.). Jolly said something about "a bunch of Eskimos bought the station and changed the format."

I just remember lots of Technotronic and C+C Music Factory on it. As a kid, I liked that kind of stuff so I'd switch it to 93Q, Energy 96.5 or KRBE if something else came on. I wish I had recorded more as a kid. It seems like airchecks of KBXX in it's early days are extremely rare. I have some from around late 1991 and early 1992 but they are all short clips.

I know it's been a while since you posted this, but I wanted to let you know that there are quite a few airchecks out there for 93Q, Energy 96.5, and Power 104 as well as the mix shows. I LOVED Houston radio during the late 80's/Early 90's. Here are just a few clips:
