3TV's New Weathercaster

is...TESS RAFOLS!!! Apparently, 3TV didn't have anyone who was able to come in this morning and Tess did an EXCELLENT job with the weather (much better than Andi who will be there this evening). As I watched Tess do the weather, I was thinking that she is truly the weekend version of Kaley! :)

Saturday was a weird morning. Tess posted on Facebook that she had to learn the weather computers on Friday. So she knew ahead of time that she would be doing it Saturday morning. At the 7:48 mark, Tess displayed the high temp for Sunday and had 192° instead of 92. Honest mistake

I think it was a leftover graphic from a couple of weeks ago. :-D

@b4, eveny weathercaster has wrong or missing temps every once in a while. Since Tess isn't a meteorologist, I gave her a pass (and she pointed it out and they laughed about it). Tess did a great job!

In contrast, Laura Young, over on ABC 15 Saturday evening, had the wrong days on her extended forecast (it started with Saturday, rather than Sunday) and actually showed it twice before fixing it for the end of the newscast. During the second weather hit, she obviously realized it was wrong when she started reading it, but she just kind of nervously laughed and didn't point it out to the viewers. Epic fail for a meteorologist!

That should be Laura Thomas (yes, she is young so maybe that's why you called her that).
Maybe they don't teach that in the distance learning classes at Miss. State.

Thanks for the correction! Speaking of Laura Thomas, does anyone else think that Iris Hermosillo is better than Laura -- yet Laura has the better position (weekend pm rather than weekend am)?

Personally I think they both have a habit of letting their voices get squeeky and iritating as well as the occasional speaking at 300 words per minute. (I understand that sometimes they are forced to get a lot of information out in a short timeframe). What amazes me is these are not two new j-school grads on their first assignment. I would have thought by now a new director would have pulled them aside and worked with them to improve their delivery. Then again...mayby that's why they were available when ABC-15 needed them.

I don't know if weekend AM vs weekend PM at ABC15 is a better shift or not. Other than being an early call on Saturday and Sunday mornings I really don't see a lot of difference. Iris is usually called to fill in for the "Chief Meteorologist" when she if off.

@iht I was thinking the same thing, even as I was posting. I would think that ABC15 would have more viewers on weekend evenings but who knows? However, as you noted, 5am is a very early start on the weekends and you definitely would get half a night's worth of sleep ;)

If we were talking about 3TV, weekend mornings are definitely the stronger newscasts. Even with the addition of Karen and Jamie, weekend evenings are not 3TV's strong point. Honestly, 3TV would have been better off adding a fourth meteorologist/reporter than adding an extra anchor/reporter.

I'm wondering if weekend AM is more important to ABC15 than weekend PM? It must have been a big conversation starting the program at 5:00, 2 hours before other stations.

Also, does Iris like AM better than PM and it was her choice which shift to work? Maybe she's a morning person, likes being done by Noon(?) and goes to bed early.

I believe the decision to add the weekend morning show at 5am came from Scripps HQ. A few months after ABC15 started it, the Scripps station in San Diego, KGTV 10News, also started the same routine. And I saw another Scripps station announcing their new weekend morning news shows recently so I think it came down from the big tower.

I'm not sure if it was a big conversation or not. It probably was more a decision to go into a timeslot that was not taken by GMAZ, Fox 10 (on Saturdays), and 12 News. The one benefit of 5am to 7am is that they are not competing with any other local news. Obviously, the 8am hour on Saturday competes with everyone else.

Another reason that weekend am's might be better than weeekend pm's is that Iris gets to be a "co-anchor" as well as the weathercaster, whereas in the evenings it is just the weather position which is lower profile. I know of two other station that have the weather person as the co-anchor on weekend am's: KOMO in Seattle and WCMH in Columbus has been doing it for years.
