97.1 signal issues?

This morning when I tuned in to 97.1, there was no RDS and the signal was weak. IIRC 95.5 is on the same tower but at a lower height sounded like it always does. Is this some kind of weird new tropo event, or (most likely) is WSRV using it's backup?

One would think Cox would have 97.1's aux site on the 106.7 / 104.7 tower which technology should work because 106.7 has the same city of license (Gainesville) as WSRV.

I noticed the same thing. I see that they hold a construction permit to move the transmitter to the Buford water treatment plant property off Buford Dam Rd. Could there be some testing going on?

Main transmitter site: https://maps.google.com/?q=http://t...97.1&contour=60&city=GAINESVILLE&state=GA.kml

Aux #1 transmitter site (same tower as main, but lower): http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/c...97.1&contour=60&city=GAINESVILLE&state=GA.kml

Aux #2 (different location): http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/c...97.1&contour=60&city=GAINESVILLE&state=GA.kml

I noticed the signal issue this morning. So, their are probably on low power, using the aux antenna lower on the tower, or broadcasting from the second location.

From my 60 second look at the FCC file it looks like the CP was issued this on 9/16/2013. So, I would say it is not the from the CP site.

Comparing the two sites (Chateau Elan and Buford Dam) on Radio-Locator, I can't see what this gets WSRV in terms of coverage. The power diff isn't big enough to make a difference in penetration, and the contour doesn't reach as far--in any direction it seems.

Also i notice the other station on the tower WSBB 95.5 has an application to move to an in-town tower:

http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/fmq?list=0&facid=11710

If this application is approved, then I can only guess the days of the former: "tallest man made structure in GA" are limited.

BTW wasn't 97.1 a primary EAS "input" station. IIRC There were a couple of threads on the internet and EAS on this site before the redesign. I personally question the use of the internet for any critical services (STLs included) with the possibility of cyber warfare.

IMHO the cost savings of using the internet is NOT more important than security. I guess it will take another Pearl Harbor type of attack for Americans to learn this lesson AGAIN!

The 95.5 application to move to New Street has been there forever. They've been waiting for the FCC to change the rule on newspaper co-ownership.

97.1 weak

well ever station has at some time changed an antenna, this was the day Fri. I understand that lighting took its toll and they had order a replacement. when the crew came in to put up the new ant. they did have to use another ant down the tower and lower power for safe climbing of the tower. It should have been back up at full power by 6 pm

Not the tallest in GA anymore. That distinction belongs to the WCTV TV tower in Metcalf, according to Wikipedia.

well WSRV still IS the tallest Full power C fm on the tallest tower in Ga. there is a translator in Cleveland Ga over 400 M.

Ok, so there WERE climbers on the tower on Saturday afternoon! I live about 3 miles from it and thought I saw something odd near the top. Used binoculars and it sure looked like two climbers near the top. Around 5 pm the signal sounded full power again.

I was watching some kind of reality show where someone went with someone to climb a tower to do repairs. Besides bringing on a full-blown case of acrophobia with the swaying tower, it involved climbing to a point on the tower above the aux, switching off the main transmitter and turning on the aux, climbing to the top to do the work, climbing back down to the same spot, turning on the main transmitter and turning off the aux, and climbing down.

Are there any listeners to 97.1 in some of the well known fringe areas like Rome, Carrollton, or Forsyth? Curious to see if this new antenna really changed anything with the signal.

I use to live in Carrollton and moved about 5 months ago. 97.1 was NOT as clear as it use to be. In fact, I could actually hear 106.7 - which has a lower power than 97.1 - more clear than 97.1. Not sure if this has to do with interference from the west of Carrollton or if it's something with 106.7. I also noticed I could pick up 106.7 down interstate 16 near Dublin Georgia before country station out of Douglas Georgia squashed it.

Roddy the elevator goes to 1280 feet level then they clim.........................

I had to drive to Carrollton this morning and in downtown Carrollton it was so strong that it bled over to 96.9 and 97.3...

Roddy the elevator goes to 1280 feet level then they clim.........................

I was petrified when I had to climb the little metal ladder that goes from the transmitter room on the Westin Peachtree Plaza to the roof, where the tower is.

People who would take the elevator 1280 feet on that tower and then climb have my ultimate respect.

Roddy I too have been on the tip top of Westin roof. How the the eng got that two 20Kw transmitters up on top of there I dont know.Bu what a view .......................................

Roddy, it does have an elevator.(about 4 feet wide) I've been in it. It is a bit scary. BTW, when I was at Fox we sometimes had "thermal inversions" between the tower and studio site on Riveredge Pkwy. (a difference in temps made the microwave signal curve) But, there were two separate microwaves at different heights on the tower. When a temp inversion occurred, the system would automatically switch. We also had a phone line back-up as a third choice. I don't know if all that still exists today. BTW, on a clear day, the view at the top was beautiful, cold, windy and dangerous.
