Former WLW Midday Host is out at WGN

Mike McConnel is out.

Would WLW want him back replacing Bill Cunningham who is now on TV or would the use him on 55KRC which is sinking in the ratings? Or maybe Mike doesn't need to be on the radio and will retire with his buyout. It is a shame CC has all of the good AM signals.

From John Kieseswetter

11:30 a.m. update: Mike McConnell posted on Facebook this morning that he’ll resume his show “at least in a podcast format” in the not too distant future. Here’s his post:

“I know it’s like a broken record – no show today but hopefully all will be put to bed soon and we can move on. I’ll be back in at least a podcast format at some point in the not-to-distant future. And stay in touch,” Mike McConnell

Not beyond the realm of possibility, but it's not like they've been holding Mike's old slot open for him for 3 years. Someone woud have to be displaced and doesn't most everyone have a long-term contract?

Rehire McConnell for afternoons on WLW and dump the guttural and perverted sounding Eddie Fingers and the intentionally annoying Tracy Jones. Bad radio at its worst. McConnell would bring back some much-needed class along with his unique and controlled brand of snarkiness.

how about this...

Cincinnati Enquirer TV/media reporter John Kiesewetter was asked recently whether McConnell could get another job in the market. “Probably,” Kiesewetter wrote. “Most likely WLW, but that means blowing someone out. Who? There’s not another local news talk station in town any more.”

can you say move Amazon back to a sports channel (pick one)...move Sloan to the late shift and give Mikey boy his old slot back....

now, move Eddie back to WEBN (and let him run it) fire or move Jones to work with Brennaman and the Reds ....and put a Burbank show on three to 6pm ala Doc Wolfe and evergreen material from the first 20 years...

and now you have a powerhouse...

and dis time I am tellin you the truth

It is a shame. We couldn't have afforded him at 1160, anyways.

If it is true that Randy, Decastro and the now head of Tribune had dinner on Wednesday night, then maybe there is a WGN FM coming and Mike will still be in Chicago. Someone did a story about this and had Mike walking some of this back.

There is a WGN.FM (as in that's a domain) and that's where Brandmeier's podcasts are but Mike's were in the WGN-2 Siberia. Supposedly WGN's looking for an FM to LMA and one of Randy's could be the one. Whether McConnell lands there is questionable.

His agent negotiated a buyout on the remaining 2 years on his contract. There are opportunities in building a network in podcasting like Glenn Beck has done with The Blaze so it's possible He doesn't need to return to terrestrial radio right away.

That is what Robert Feder reported. However, there is a conflicting report that has McConnell still in camp and maybe moving over to a potential WGN owned FM.

The last line says McConnell has denied the rumor that He is returning to WLW and if you look on Mike's FB He states He will be announcing his future plans soon. I believe CRM was just repeating what Cunningham stated on his show and posted as fact. If you know Cunningham and his show, you are already are questioning this as whether or not it's a bit. Why would Mike McConnell need a co host Eddie Fingers? That doesn't make any sense. I say take what you read their with a grain of salt.
