KGY FM McCleary loses NW Legend

KGY FM 96.9 McCleary loses afternoon driver Kevin "The Busman". Kevin handled afternoon drive on the Country outlet for roughly the last 18 months. Kevin is a talented air man... previously you heard him on 96.5 Young Country in Seattle and KNBQ 102.9 out of Chehalis.

He was voice-tracking, right? Why is he gone? KNBQ was 102.9. KGY has been calling themselves "KAYO", emulating the real 99.3 KAYO except on a tight budget.

How that station (KGY) stays on the air is beyond me. At best they are just below college level standards. And now you let go the only "Local" talent you have. It's just a matter of time and we will see a "FORECLOSURE" notice on their double RED doors. Just a matter of time.

I vote they make a deal to bring back KAYO 99.3 and make a deal to move KDDS to 96.9. Then again, getting those call letters from 100.3 in Wasila Alaska would not be easy...

...And take a bite out of KANY? I don't think Bill would like that....

Station owners in Olympia are some of the oddest ducks in the world.

Maybe it has something to do with the Evergreen State College being there...

Or go back to "96.9 The Sound"...or maybe a very soft WDUV-like AC format. Would work really well for the ocean beaches. We already have smooth jazz even though it's a crappy signal - if not for KZIZ I would have requested possibly Smooth Jazz on 96.9.

KGY FM had promise when it went back to a country music format. However, I really don't think they have done a very good job at creating a good brand. I imagine that people in Grays Harbour prefer listening to KANY or KXXK over a station with a weaker signal that has the same playlist.

I still would like to see 99.3fm come back as something different then KDDS. Probably not likely..

Yes, The Sound was a pretty good station, though formatically it was just about the oddest thing I've ever heard on commercial radio. If I were to bring that format back though, I'd probably put something like Open House Party on Saturday nights, or if we don't want something like that in that odd timeslot, maybe a local show similar to that on Saturday nights.

They wanted to emulate what KAYO did when in Olympia. The call letters were snapped up by Morris Communications for their Alaska station. They did that because they apparently thought that I was interested in them.

99.3 is a Seattle "rim shot". It covers over 3 million population. 96.9 does not have the same coverage. Call letters don't make or break a station or format.

Ya gotta love speculation... my understanding is that KGY-FM is doing much better than they have done in recent years.

One thing I have not seen discussed on this board, are the advantages and disadvantages of broadcasting from south mountain. Radio Locator depicts KDDS 99.3 to have pretty decent coverage in the puget sound area, and excellent coverage in the south sound. I am wondering is KDDS will stay on south mountain for the foreseeable future. One thing I have never been able to figure out, is it more optimal to have your antenna on south mountain compared to capitol peak?

By browsing the interweb, I have no trouble at all finding information about broadcasting from tiger and cougar mountain. However, I cant wind anything on south mountain or capital peak. It was actually on this board that I learned the actual names for those broadcasting locations :D

Sometimes there will be mileage separation issues with one site and not another. South Mountain is NW of Capital Peak, and that can make a difference in the power classification of the station. Capital Peak is used as a backup site by a couple of stations. South Mountain is considered a Seattle "rim shot". It's a lot easier to do these things in some other markets. Dallas is an example, with FM broadcast towers along a "rim" around Dallas, all spaced from the main Dallas FM site so as to permit a 2nd adjacent signal. Since the area is so flat, it works well.

Thank you for the information Mr. Wolfenbarger!

Out of curiosity, do you have any plans to change formats on KANY 93.7 when the move to South Mountain is complete? Of course that would mean letting KXXK and KGY handle country music grays harbour county...

C'mon Bill- all stations let people know WAY in advance of a format change, don't they???

Aww, give the kid a break, Randy. He/she's young and shows passion for the biz - something a lot of teenagers don't have these days! :)

Most people don't understand much about the reasons broadcasters do things, they just speculate. But that's what makes the boards so much fun sometimes.

KXXK has been country for over a dozen years, and has been consistent. While KGY-FM is currently doing country, that is the second format change in the past few years. They went from Real Country (classic country) to a strange contemporary format to hot country, using the KAYO brand except for the actual call letters. KGY-FM does not cover all of Grays Harbor County, but they do cover Thurston County well.

After my moves, Grays Harbor will continue to have the Bigfoot format on KANY. How that happens will be revealed to anyone who sends me a non-refundable deposit of $10,000. No US currency please.
