Unicorns! Show ponies! Where’s the beef?!

This is great radio

Most people remember hearing Joe Buck‘s final out of the 2004 World Series, as well as Dave Goucher‘s call of Patrice Bergeron‘s game-winning overtime tally in Game 7 of the 2013 Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against Toronto. Add the call from Scott Zolak and Bob Socci on Sunday to that list. Socci, the play-by-play announcer for Patrios games on 98.5 The Sports Hub, hadn’t even uttered the words “touchdown” before Zolak went absolutely bananas. The result: a hysterical, near tear-inducing call in which Zolak screams “Unicorns! Show ponies! Where’s the beef?!”

That's the first time I heard that. That was cringeworthy.

Over the top, yes, a regular season game, yes, but it was a pretty impressive last minute win.
By contrast one of the first calls Don Orsillo made for the Red Sox was a no-hitter by Hideo Nomo, IIRC.
He didn't sound all that excited at the end and when asked later said he didn't think he was supposed to show more
emotion than usual, or something.

JT the Brick emphasizes passion with himself and his callers ("sound off like you've got a pair; don't put me to sleep"). One time I was listening and he abruptly interrupted a caller because a game winning goal in sudden death overtime was scored in an NHL game. And one time as he was doing the show, Albert Pujols then with the Cardinals hit a game winning homerun. He blurted out, Albert Hooblehoff!
A sound bite of that is played on occasion. In his excitement...Albert Hooblehoff, everyone.

Mike Lange, the longtime voice of the Pittsburgh Penguins, is famous for his nonsensical exclamations after Penguins goals. He has several that he falls back on regularly -- "Scratch my back with a hacksaw!" for example -- but he makes up new ones every season.

Still don't get it.

I live far from Boston, but I listened to them call the whole game on Sirius XM. When Brady really moved the team downfield in such a short time, and he scored the touchdown, for a few seconds I thought I was hearing distorted language coming from another planet. Then I heard "he's your quarterback", or something like that. It was a great call on the radio! It doesn't get much better than that.

The game that CBS had been showing was finished, and they cut into the end of the Patriots game, so I got to also watch the last 4 or 5 minutes as well as listen to local coverage. What a finish to a game! He's done that before, but never quite like this. Brady's a cool customer.
