WISP on a series fed AM tower

Is anyone doing Wireless Internet antennas on a series fed AM tower? A skirt will cost 6 grand plus installation and that will probably make it economically unfeasible. If so, what are you using to isolate the the CAT5 and DC cables? 250 watt station, 1/2 wave tower.
 
How 'bout fiber for the data, and put the power on the tower side of the lighting xfmr/choke. Especially if the lighting controller is on the tower, there should be AC available at all times.
 
Great idea Bill. While this particular WISP uses CAT5, I believe they have spoke of upgrading some sites to fiber. The tower lighting uses an Austin Transformer and frankly, I have no idea where the tower light controller is but with a unipole costing $6000, I'll move the controller and provide that steady power stream. I like it!
 
Just run fiber up the tower. While on the tower they can convert back to Cat5. You could do it with only a short fiber jumper to isolate everything and go Cat5 up the tower.

Do you see in the ATU anything that resembles a light controller? It would probably be cheaper to have a fiber converter/jumper and move the light controller on to the stick than skirt it for $6k.

No question it would be cheaper. The idea to use fiber just never entered my mind. And even if I have to whip up a basic tower light controller, that's a couple hundred bucks vs the skirt, having it installed/tuned, etc. That was headed into the upper single $K's. I'll have the local guy take some pics of the controller (wherever it is) and roll from there.
 
Even easier.... Simply put the main radio up the tower, cat 5 to a "bullet" type radio at the bottom.
Connectivity is between the bottom radio and the users via Cat 5 from the radio bridging the tower
bottom and the outside world. does take three radios but extra simple. Am doing this at several sites.
Doesn't change the "R" value much at all. You may not even have to re-license if you check before and after.
The only hitch is the power. And that shouldn't be too difficult. Now you have nothing additional across the base.

will unipole allow any other revenue on tower? I have 2 class 4's with unipoles, have our microwaves on both, 1 has a small cell site, other has our fm translator. All much easier withunipole

Within the limits of the tower windload. Studies are in order here, incumbent on the prospective user. But there are a good
number of options for revenue, along with the co-lo of a WISP, for space for service internet. You benefit and so shall they.
Gives you internet for audio feed primary or backup, VOip, and if you are real creative with them, you can get an AD pack
schedule, create and serve customers for you each to make a buck or twenty.
