Wigo history

Hey Guys:

Would anybody know what date WIGO 1340 went from R&B to R&B oldies and then to black news/talk? I do know that Allied Media of Georgia bought the station on Nov 14, 1990 and the news talk format ended on Friday April 7, 1995 at 2pm.

Thanks for the help.

T.J.

Hey T.J....

All of that work that you put into sharing history here on the board in its previous incarnation appears to be lost now, since anything prior to the recent "upgrade" is no longer searchable.

Did you ever get anywhere with having David Eduardo host something more permanent for you?

Hey Scott:

Not yet. I am doing revisions on Miami and now working on Atlanta. All lost well I do keep some of my posts on backup. I have had a very bad year family wise and haven't been working on any radio stuff for a while but I am back at it and rolling forward. It also answers my question of when I look something up and it says it is not there now I know why.

Didn't Wayne Williams start this station?
I remember about 1982, WIGO was at it's peak. They sold DJ airtime (or something like that) to make money. I worked at nights and they were sometimes throwing it down at 12, 1 AM.

Wayne Williams? WIGO started in his parent's basement? I doubt it. While I still can't buy the official story of what happened back during that time as far as him supposedly tossing bodies twice his size and weight off the James Jackson parkway (aka South Cobb Drive) bridge without making so much as a grunt, I doubt he had the capital to start a radio station.

I've done much research on him in college, and he did tell some tall tales in his time. I can't find his name on any FCC licenses or historical documents tying him to WIGO or any other FCC licensed facility. Remember he also claimed to be on staff at WSB-TV, The Atlanta Journal, and WAGA.

I don't know if 1340 AM was ever R&B and R&B Oldies. There was a time when it was a black News/Talk station. I don't know exactly when this happened, but it did become a black News/Talk station after its time as the rock station WAKE-AM. The year of when the station signed on the air as WAKE-AM was back in 1955. The date of the flip from rock station WAKE-AM to black News/Talk WIGO-AM is unknown. All I do know is the fact that the station most likely flipped to black News/Talk sometime before my time. That is all.

Wayne Williams had some type of press card and did freelance for a few Atlanta stations during the 70's. He even had his picture taken with Maynard Jackson mayor of Atlanta. Willliams knew how to work people. He was helped by the fact that Atlanta stations were faced with new FCC regs on hiring minorities at the time.
William's father to his dying day professed his son's innocence in the Atlanta child murders.

WAKE flipped to WIGO in 1965 and was Black Top 40. Studios were in the basement of the Georgian Terrace Hotel. Their "supeer star" was Paul "Sir Raggedy" Flagg who did midday (10 - 2 PM). I'm at a loss on its morphs from about 1967.

Don't know about WIGO, but I know for sure Williams was associated with WYZE and was a session photographer for Jazzology Records.

Bodies were not twice Williams size. He was captured, Atlanta child murders stopped. Not a coincidence.

I know agent who worked case. Williams conviction is solid.

WIGO flipped to Black News/Talk in March 1993. I think it was that Monday the last week of March. It flipped from R&B Oldies that was losing money and had bad ratings. I am still trying to find out when it went R&B Oldies.

Mike Roberts, former morning man at V103, was PD at WIGO back in the late 70's. It did battle with WAOK in those days back before FM had really taken over music radio.
The late Ron Sailor leased the WIGO signal back in the mid 90's and did the black talk format. It only lasted for a year or so.
The Georgia Radio Hall of Fame website has more information on the previous incarnations of 1340.

From the Top 40 am History thread (seems to fit here...):
WIGO was on 1340 and replaced WAKE in 1965. The 1340 history was WBGE > WAKE > WIGO > WALR > WIFN.

WIGO was R&B/Urban from the start and gave WAOK good competition. Bob McKee had moved from WAKE to WAOK, and Tommy Goodwin ("TG") moved from WYNX to WIGO when it started up. Both held the morning shifts, so for awhile, the two top R&B/Urban stations in Atlanta had white guys in the morning drive. Nobody cared because they both sounded great. Radio was fun in ATL.

The Incredible Radio, WIGO AM 1570

WIGO AM 1570 is now owned by Sheridan Broadcasting Company out of Pittsburgh PA. The station has owned the call letters WIGO for several years now and was formerly WSSA. The 5,000 watt format is variety with a throwback to the format back in the day with Gospel, Talk, Blues and Classic R&B. New imaging by Mitch Faulkner recently has the station sounding pretty good with music not heard in the southern soul and R&B genre. Check it out at www.wigoam.com!
