October Ratings

Huge, huge increases last month and this month for WIP and WPEN.

Last four months
WIP: 3.5, 4.2, 5.0, 5.6
WPEN: 1.8, 2.4, 3.1, 3.7

WIP is all the way up to 5th over all.

Is this just the NFL season? Those are huge increases.

Sharp drop for WPHT's cume. lost 59,900 listeners from the latest ratings period, September 12 - October 9 , WHYY's cume lost 35,700 listeners in the latest ratings period.

Am I the only one who finds it very odd that sports talk is so popular in Philadelphia. I mean how much can one take talking about sports, what can you say over and over again. I just do not understand it, just tell me the final scores and important updates and thats it but what can you really talk about for hours on end. I can see spoken word, news and talk formats being popular, so many topics and hot stories but sports, what more can you really say on 3 local signals and a few rims. Now if they had a slot each day for WWE and TNA Wrestling talk that Sirius/XM have, that is entertainment :)

Poeple put their brains on autopilot, almost into a trance it seems. That's the only way I can imagine sportstalk and hyper-partisan newstalk holding an audience. Intellectually vital and curious people likely don't listen to either of those formats. Newstalk maybe at one time, but not these days.

Anyone who has ever attended a sports event in Philadelphia, whether it's football, baseball, hockey, or even college basketball, knows that Philadelphia is one of the most passionate cities in the country about sports. Even when the Phillies are losing, people in Philly want to talk about it. And talk about it. Almost forgot the 76ers. I'm not the only one :)

Do you guys know there's also FM? Lots of other stations with other formats?
Actually the WIP and WPEN that they are talking about are now FM stations. Both stations started the format on an AM frequency, simulcasted on FM for awhile and now are FM only.

Sports talk does incite passion, but on the whole, it's lighter and a lot of times funnier than the boilerplate yowling found with Rush/Beck/Hannity/Levin. Hopefully, Randy, that answers your question.

Did Beasley stop subscribing for WJBR? They dropped to nowheresville.

Aside from JBR, by my count there was a gain of 2.0 shares total for all listed stations, so it seems like it was a good book for a lot of people. WPHT, WXTU, 104.5 and Wired are about the only ones with losses beyond random fluctuation.

I was always convinced that 2 stations could make it in Philly as long as the second station had a local presence with a strong anchor in drive time. Like him or not, Missinelli fits that bill. I find the other shows to be fairly awful but they are drawing more than enough to survive.

I am totally addicted to Tony Bruno's stream of consciousness show from 10am to Noon on the Fanatic. Love it. He and Harry Mayes are a fun listen as far as I'm concerned. Goofiness, lighthearted, fun talk. They have a good rapport with each other and the fans. And Bruno and Missanelli are fine counter-points to one another. These shows are superior to their opposite shows at WIP. The rest of the day needs help at WPEN, but WIP is old and it sounds it.

I agree with Dave. But If you do get burned out on "Phillycentric" sportstalk [94.1 and 97.5] as is definitely possible, then 610 CBS Sports Radio and 1290 Fox Sports Radio and 97.3 ESPN Radio all offer national sports stories so the focus and discussion offers more than just the Phils, Eagles, Flyers or Sixers with some great interviews, etc.

I especially like Dan Patrick 9am-noon on Fox Sports Radio, and either Jim Rome on CBS Sports Radio or Jay Mohr on Fox Sports Radio both airing from 12-3pm. Definitely far more entertaining, to listen to while at work, than Rush/Hannity/Beck.

I also agree with WCRadio2, when I want Phillycentric Sports talk, I most often pick 97.5 WPEN, the Fanatic. It just seems more interesting, better discussion.

They probably only subscribe to the Wilmington ratings simce they are a Wilmington station.

At the same time, we have stations like ESPN 97.3, Thunder 106, and Lite Rock 96.9 pop in at the bottom of the ratings. Are they really subscribing to the Philly ratings just to see 0.1 shares on rare occasions?

If they DO subscribe to help them sell counties in Jersey better, then OK. But I find it odd that stations like WJBR and WSTW are missing while even more fringe stations pop in occasionally.
