Sinclair layoffs announced?

Sources are saying a number of Sinclair employees were pink-slipped today. Their jobs are done at the end of 2013.

Wow, that is a bit generic. Any word on where these lay-offs will occur?

Seattle remains Sinclair's largest market. Will be interesting if they cut there.

Coming Soon For Halloween! In 3-D And Screaming Stereo! Bloodbath At Fisher Plaza!.........

At least 18 radio and tv workers have been given pink slips. Hardly any discussion? I guess there are very few here making money working in radio.
Maybe there will be new jobs in Point Roberts? Will these new frequencies provide radio jobs?

any update to this? I heard about 10% of staff, mostly TV and across all departments. One name I heard was Ian Sterling from the radio side which is too bad.

I had heard Sterling as well. Maybe a couple more in the KOMO radio department, one or two on the Promotions side, someone in Creative Services (might be Scott Carty) got walking papers, and even John Carlson which leaves NO live and local shows on KVI.

My gut tells me Sinclair may be ready to deal out the radio side.

Ian Sterling's twitter indicates he was laid off yesterday, effective immediately.

KOMO radio had really been staffing up the "news" side lately at the expense of sports and business. Something had to give. Too bad it was him, he's pretty good.

John Carlson is still listed on the KVI website. I doubt Carty or Carlson were let go.

Funny, I left my position at mountain time zone radio station almost one month ago, and I am still on their website. You would think these thing were attended to, but the reality is they are not.

Someone I used to work with at KCPQ in master control, who was working for KOMO-TV as a satellite/microwave ENG truck operator got this layoff notice :-(

An update from my sources: About 10% of the staff laid off, mostly in TV. Mr. Carty IS one of those being let go. Some people left right away (Ian Sterling), others are staying on for various durations. Also heard one of the radio anchors may be retiring on Jan. 1.

My guess is it's either Bill Rice or Art Sanders, Hutyler would be a dark horse one as well. Sad to hear about Mr. Carty, the guy was a good talent. That just leaves Tracy Schakohl as the remaining production guy there. My heart goes out to ANYONE who does that kind of work as those jobs are shrinking out.

What might be a good fit for the cluster would be someone like Alpha out of Portland buying most or all of the radio end. They turned around KXL and KINK. KOMO AM and possibly FM could remain news, KPLZ could be the next KINK or KMTT AAA format.
KVI could stay KVI . Just a thought.

yes, I agree. Lets take the #4 billing station in the market in KPLZ and flip it to a format that no one listens to.

Not a bad idea. Alpha would enjoy breaking in to the Seattle Market. Let's not forget that Cumulus wouldn't mind dipping their toes here, there was still that rumor of Cumulus buying the CBS cluster awhile back, but nothing came of it. There's also other players like Hubbard and Bonneville who would want to expand their footprint.

Nah, keep KPLZ as it is, it's a market leader. KOMO would need a stronger FM signal to stay competitive but I can get the 97.7 signal pretty clear on the I-5 corridor, but as you get to North Seattle it gets hazy, not sure who they'd be stepping on if they filed a power increase with the FCC. KVI....that's what I would call the redheaded stepchild. I keep in mind that at any moment, Clear Channel could make a play for rightie talk with one of their AM signals and snag both KVI and KTTH properties if they wanted, leaving both stations to broadcast 2nd or 3rd tier talent.....you could always piss off the rural community and flip KVI to Progressive Talk haha.

As a former sat truck operator myself, I'm not feeling great about this. Best wishes and sympathies going out to my friends and colleagues who are among the victims.
