New Urban on the way to Houston ?

Only surprise is how long its taken. The big question is who? The Arrow's been down lately, but enough to throw in the towel?

This is great hope it is tracks from 1988 to 2002 if it is 2004 and newer I hope it fails
AllAccess is saying another station is "targeting" KBXX and KMJQ. That seems to imply it will be The Arrow.
Univision is a possible candidate as well since ratings for their stronger rimshot, KAMA, have been in the gutter lately. But I would instead bet my money on The Arrow flipping to it indeed, for a few reasons:
- They have been getting creamed book by book by the powerhouse Eagle, thanks to their 2 frequencies.
- The Boxx has been constantly number 1 or number 2 across the board book by book.
- Clear Channel has been launching Urban stations in a few markets across the country lately (Miami being one of them with the return of 103.5 The Beat)
But if this rumor is true all I can say is: FINALLY!!!!!!!!

A station near the center of Harris County is not a rimshot.
CC is not the only conglomerate to launch urbans this year. Cox has launched two in Jacksonville (Hot 106.5 and Power 106.1), Entercom launched an urban ac in Austin, Apex launched an urban in Charleston, Hedgwood launched two in Atlanta last year and Gainesville is set to land an urban ac in months.
CBS in Los Angeles adjusted The Wave from smooth ac (prev jazz) to an urban ac with R&B and some jazz cuts some weeks ago, and CC adjusted urban AC Majic in St Louis to a full service urban.
Mega 101 is doing fine targeting a growth demographic. No reason to blow it up.
KTHT's rimshot signal is inadequate for an Urban format. Recall that Hot 97.1 was a flop on the same facility a dozen years ago. Power 97.5, another rimshot, also was a failure. The current Country Legends format gets good numbers considering the signal limitations, and is a perfect fit for the demographics where the signal is best.
KKRW is the most likely candidate, as they are losing in a war of attrition with the Eagle combo, not to mention that their audience is getting old.
I also doubt (but will not dismiss out of hand) that Radio One is ready to give up on News92FM.
Wild card: Keep an eye on KHMX.
Thought: If Cox succeeds in killing off KKRW, might they break the 106.9/107.5 simulcast and add something new on one of the signals?

Losing Dean & Rog has also killed The Arrow's morning numbers and made that shift a revolving door, though it wasn't nearly the disaster it would've been if PPM hadn't come along.
Doesn't matter. What matters is the billing, not what the trades think of it. Having said that, I'll agree with you. La Mega isn't going anywhere. It's been the highest cuming Spanish station five of the last six months and has made money for quite some time.
KTHT is doing as well as it can with the signal it has, and it's a good fit for the Cox cluster. So, I agree. It's going nowhere. Plus, as Froggy mentions, it's already been done on that stick and didn't work. The demographics haven't changed enough to justify trying it again.
I remember KPTY taken off the air on what we found out was their 10th anniversary in 2009.
Don't forget that this may be tied to the expansion of co-owned Premiere Networks' "The Breakfast Club" show, which Clear Channel sees as their pet project, so if anything this could be a factor in why KKRW just became a format flip candidate.

For what it's worth, I emailed Steve Fixx, programming director of KKRW, and asked him about a potential switch to Urban with a link to this thread. This was his response:
What I admire about Univision is the company's willingness to make changes -- just look at how the Dallas cluster had a bit of a shake-up after CBS flipped KMVK from Mega to regional Mexican. Some broadcasters seem to be a little too comfortable with their portfolios, only to get a butt-kicking when a new station comes on the air and shakes up the market. I don't put Univision in that pool. And that leads me to believe that if an urban makes sense in their cluster, then they'll try to beat Clear Channel to the punch. If it doesn't make sense, then it won't happen. Despite the arguably tepid performance of KAMA, the company seems to have a greater understanding of its markets than a lot of others.
Tom Joyner has been the only syndicated show to work in Houston in the long term. Otherwise syndication has not worked here; Big Boy's Neighborhood, Doug Banks and Kidd Kraddick only lasted more than a year. The Madd Hatta Morning Show has maintained plenty of loyalty from its unique audience composition and sponsors which helps Radio One make their money. As far as we know, Jimbo is the longest running DJ on The Box. If CC does this and The Breakfast Club lands here it has yet to be seen how long it lasts here with the special set of demographics Houston has.
Hopefully it's a different branding. This is Texas and we don't need another station here calling itself the "Beat." Maybe "93.7 Jamz," or "Power 93.7" (or "Power 94") would do or revive the "Love 94" name.
