Wpaz is finally back on the air with the word fm

WPAZ AM 1370 is finally back on the air with the WORD FM. Yes, WPAZ also went religion. They are carrying the WORD-FM during the day only. Four corners communications decided to make WPAZ daytime only station with a religious format. They are carrying the same exact music format as AM 950 WKDN. So, now here in the Philadelphia radio market you will have two religious format to choose from. Take your pick, WPAZ AM 1370 or WWIQ 106.9. Sorry folks for the bad news. I was hoping one of these stations would go in an oldies direction, but no such luck. WPAZ is on the air with a new transmitter. I don't know for sure, but at times they sound like 500 watts, and other times they sound like 1,000 watts. But they are now strictly a daytime only station. The WPAZ audio stream can be found at the WORD-FM WEBSITE. I don't know for sure what it is, but you will have no problem finding it on the internet.

I just did a quick look at Atlanta. The last time I looked I thought the number was higher, but the Atlanta area has TEN stations programming religious content. Maybe we could send you a couple if you need them?

I don't remember if I previous searched ALL OF GEORGIA or FM only or some combination that was 30%. Whatever. We probably have one or two to spare if you need them.

There are many who want to lump all 'religious' stations into being the same but the two new stations may attract new audiences to Christian radio locally. WPAZ is now "Traditional Songs of the Faith" with nothing but soft hymns and traditional gospel songs - somewhat like the music part of Family Radio but without all the talk and preaching. K-Love & WPAZ being all music are the first stations that may attract 'mainstream' Christians from moderate and liberal denominations who like hymns of faith but not fundamentalist or conservative talk shows/preaching, BUT conservative Christians will also like the hymn format, too. The western Montgomery - eastern Berks area has a strong Mennonite and varied Christian base that supported 107.5 WBYO/WBYN for years but their music now may be too contemporary for the older audience that may be attracted to 1370. If they get enough people to donate to them I think they'll do well in that area. Not sure though if using the 'Word FM' branding on AM works unless the goal is just to have the ratings show all listeners to FM or AM listen to "Word FM" to boost them vs. WVKP.

Station is now identifying at top of hour as "WPAZ Pottstown and 90.9 FM WEVW Elysburg-Sunbury" which explains why what they air
doesn't match anything I hear on the FM dial from greater Lionville, still doing the traditional hymns and light gospel.

At this rate, AM radio is becoming an abbreviation for AM(en) radio.

WPAZ has been back on the air for a few months with the Word FM programming. Not sure if a new transmitter is in place, or repairs were made to what was there. Signal has more oomph in the audio, and I'd guess they're back to their 1 kW licensed power.

It appears WPAZ 1370 is now also on 103.5 FM, both the AM and FM have the same programming and are in synch with each other, (off by a couple of seconds though). It does not sound like WORD FM though because it is different programming, religious hymns, from the WORD FM on 103.7 and the many many other WORD FM frequencies that can be picked up. (too many if you ask me) The regular WORD FM was on 103.5 but not with a full signal, but now the WPAZ 103.5 signal is full strength and can be heard loud and clear. I am in Northern Chester County.

I have to try for that 'Elysburg-Sunbury' station tomorrow. I'll be up in those parts. We'll be doing some moving, exactly between the capitol 'E' in Elysburg and the capitol 'S' in Shamokin on this map.

I'll report progress via a good portable radio, :- )

Tonight, on a most-excellent car radio at the curb just before, this what was darned near crystal, though :

The listening was done from a spot very close to the lower-right corner of the legend box that says 'local, distant, fringe'.

For a few years, Radio-Locator had listed another religious station, occupying 94.5 in Ashland PA. I never heard them, and I even worked for a week in Ashland proper, plus lived five miles away. But the 94.5 is no longer listed on the 'Ashland PA' dial. So a lot of these smaller stations come and go.

It'll be interesting to try to hear WEVW. That's an interesting choice of COL priority. Perhaps it's because the more prestigious Sunbury, Danville and Milton all have stations licensed to them that 'Elysburg', a pretty-enough town with rolled-up sidewalks after dark, was acceptable.

If that 90.9 is positioning themselves as 'The Word', we got them the other day.

We were driving between Elysburg and Mt. Carmel, both of which were on that map.

The one guy who had been brought along to help with the heavier lifting ID'ed one of the picket-fencing songs as being 'a Christian song'. Now, you take one look at him and you'd figure that most of his devout worship would be at some place called Our Lady Of The Evening Mininstry. But sure enough, a gal DJ on 90.9 was heard promoing the station as 'The Word'.

What this signal has to do in the least with WPAZ is perhaps best answered by a higher power. But they're on the air.

...here in the Philadelphia radio market you will have two religious format to choose from...

Actually, for around fifty years now, Positively Different 107.5 Alive.fm (WBYN-FM) has also effectively reached the Philadephia "Top 20 US Radio Market," as a locally owned, Christian Radio Station, on 107.5fm (which also stream world-wide, online).

...stations may attract new audiences to Christian radio locally...

As John1 essentially said, just like any other genre of music, talk or otherwise ("religious" or not), each station adds it own flavor, and reaches it's own niche audience, which is why variety is quite often good.

That said, the format of Positively Different 107.5 Alive.fm (WBYN-FM) is listener driven, through handwritten surveys, received triennially, which is how 107.5 Alive (WBYN-FM) arrived at it's highly effective and unique, 60% Programming, 40% Music (60/40) format.

Hope this helps!
