It's that time of year...

It's that time of year when radio stations begin playing Christmas music. I'm sure there's at least one in the U.S. that has already gone all-Christmas, though not many. This season, I'm guessing it will be WMJX since they did it last year, and maybe WSRS will come before them. I guess I thought since it's now after Halloween, it's safe to start talking about Christmas music.

There are almost 30 stations that have flipped to Christmas so far. The closest to New England were two stations in Buffalo.

Plus there's already a conversation started about the subject within the 103.3 HD-3 thread which, naturally, includes the annual prognostication from Joe Gallant who never saw a Christmas music thread he didn't like. I'm just shocked he didn't already start one himself....which he will now that I've mentioned it. :D

I heard that 105.7 WROR will bring Christmas back this year

I doubt it, and here's why:

All but a handful of stations that go to an all-Christmas format normally program the Adult Contemporary format.

Programming-wise and demographic-wise, the all-Christmas format is most compatible with AC.

Yes, there are some oldies and classic hits stations that do go all-Christmas (indeed, WROR-105.7 did it in prior years), but the fact remains that the majority of non-AC stations that go all-Christmas don't return to their prior formats after the Holidays.

For this reason, I expect that WROR will continue it's usual classic hits format (with a handful of Christmas songs sprinkled-in), with WMJX-106.7 going all-Christmas again this year.

I also expect "Magic 106.7" will flip much earlier than last year's date of December 12th. My guess is it will be between November 29th and December 1st......unless someone else (read: WBMX-104.1) decides to do so earlier.

If someone beats WMJX to the punch, they will respond within minutes.

.

What WROR did last year was mix in some Christmas tunes each hour (top of the hour and 15, 30 and 45 past each hour) for the 3 or 4 weeks before Christmas. The only time they played all-Christmas was the 7pm-8pm hour when Santa (Paul Perry) hosted and took calls from the kiddies. Let's hope it's the same this year.

Well, might as well take a guess, right (on when WMJX-106.7 goes all-Christmas)? So, I'll say Friday, 11/29 6:00 a.m.

If WMJX is the only Boston station that goes all-Christmas, I suspect that's as good a time as any, although there's a slight chance that it could come as late as Monday morning, December 2nd.

But as I had commented earlier in this thread, should anyone else (read: WBMX-104.1) beat WMJX "to the punch" and go earlier than the 29th, WMJX will respond within minutes.
