Retro: This Week in TV Guide, November 4, 1967 - MN State Edition

This week, Stuart Whitman makes his bid for stardom (hint: it didn't work), Public Broadcasting breaks into a laboratory, Sulilivan vs. The Palace, and we make soup!

http://www.itsabouttv.com/2013/11/this-week-in-tv-guide-november-4-1967.html

As always your comments, positive as well as negative, are most welcome.

This week's listing is from Tuesday, November 7 - election day, and though it's an off-year election, NBC brings us returns from the tinderbox that is the inner city, including Cleveland and Gary, IN. And look at all the stars on the daytime shows!

I think I know why Harry Reasoner was listed as substituting for Walter Cronkite on the "CBS Evening News" that evening: That week, the first Saturn 5 moon rocket was due to be launched from Cape Canaveral, and Cronkite was at the Cape to cover the launch (which eventually took place on the morning of November 6th) and anchor a live broadcast of the launch for CBS.

At the time that week's TV Guide was published, CBS probably didn't know the exact launch date, so they probably listed Reasoner on the "Evening News" for several nights that week.

Thus, Reasoner probably hosted the news from New York for several days that week, with Cronkite doing cut-ins from the Cape.

Merv Griffin was on for only 25 minutes on WCCO? That seems
strange, considering that he was usually seen in either a one-hour
or 90-minute format, depending on the station.

Also, CBS had a five-minute newscast at 11:25 AM (CT), following
"Love Of Life"; IIRC, Joseph Benti anchored. Douglas Edwards did
the 2:25 (CT) newscast, moving to the midday one after "To Tell
The Truth" was canceled in 1968.

D'oh! My bad - 'CCO didn't carry the Hillbillies until that afternoon. I just went a little crazy with the cut and past - thanks for picking that up.

I think you're absolutely right. There's a note at the start of the programming section that, depending on the weather and other technical issues, regular programming might be preempted for the launch. So having Reasoner on the news makes perfect sense!

By the way, you can find on You Tube CBS coverage of that first Saturn 5 test launch with Cronkite's excited description (the rocket's ascent created shock waves which caused part of the roof of CBS' anchor trailer to cave-in; CBS and the other networks would build sturdier anchor studios at the press site near the launch pad for future Saturn 5 launches).
