October ratings.....

In the demo....puts things in perspective, huh?

(Now we know why Howie feels the need to be on FM....even though he does well in 55 & 65+!)

Entercom would rather have WAAF on both 107.3 and 97.7 to go after that demo rather than get a more solid signal (tho 680 is OK by day) for talk. Could a move or simulcast on FM help RKO get more and younger demo listeners? Maybe a bit but similar
moves/simulcasts elsewhere flopped.Younger listeners aren't quite flocking to talk other than sports talk.

Some are getting Howie after sunset or in workplaces etc via TuneIn, WCRN etc.Text Howie just read, referring to mixed signals on AM after dark--great, Howie. Now I can hear you and the Doobie Bros. at the same time.

I remember JJ Jeffrey used to announce at pattern change on WRKO - Goodbye Framingham

WBZ-AM is down to a 3.1 in the demo while WBUR is at 4.2 - The listeners who supported AM are dying off, it is as simple as that.

That doesn't explain how badly WCRB is doing in the demo.

Hasn't the Classical format always been an "old person's" format?

The WBZ and WBUR demographic dichotomy is very interesting. People under 55 are just not available to stations on AM....no matter what the programming.

The WBUR programming attracts more younger people because they are available on FM, and the programming is a little deeper, thoughtful and conversational.

Agreed about how some news-talk fans do appreciate it on FM (BUR, GBH) and as you say a bit deeper, thoughtful etc.

As for classical note that this site doesn't even have a classical board and there have been questions as to why. It does have
followers but maybe they're older or perhaps upper class (so a Mercedes Benz dealer might want to advertise there--or in
CRB's case, do a donorship.)

Classical attracts a highbrow audience but I would not say older in general. WCRB has signal issues in Boston proper as the Pru transmitter cluster kills them. Also I think WGBH has made a mess on how the station is programmed.

Many on this board insist that CBS will never simulcast 1030 on FM because it is a revenue stream lost but at some point they may be forced to take a hard look at doing so. They have done it in other markets, San Francisco and Chicago for news and for sports in New York. The Yankees decided to move to WFAN because of FM. The Mets decided to go to WOR instead of WEPN-FM because the Mets have no network to speak of.

WBBM in Chicago went to a FM simulcast to keep the Chicago Bears happy.

I think within 2 years you will see WBZ on 103.3 as AMP is not a long term solution.

WBZ-AM has way too many Kars for Kids spots in drivetime, that indicates to me they have problems selling inventory.

There was a taste of WBZ News Radio on FM during the week of the Marathon bombing (and yes if you're one of the dozens who have an HD radio it's on 98.5 HD3). At some point or another, WBZ was // on
98.5, 100.7, 103.3, and 104.1...( they may have also // Ch 4 TV). It was a major story that affected many of us (especially on
that Fri when Boston was shut down). 93.7 carried Howie and Kuhner (special 7 pm show) for a time, too. Whether you will get
news radio WBZ on FM as a reg format, maybe as you say at some time. Maybe 103.3; heck, News Radio 103 you might say.

Does the 96.9 Greater Media's latest DISASTER even show up as an asterick in the ratings?

The debut of Amp definitely brought the musical focus of the station several decades forward; after all on the day before the switch I heard ODS playing "I Wanna Hold Your Hand"--and if you were 12 when that song came out, you were 60 by 2012...

I notice the screen name; I don't know if this is the real Zip but IIRC he was a Ch 7 sportscaster who said a prediction he made was wrong. 'Wow do I have egg on my face', he said, and promptly smashed an egg on his noggin. I think more recently he was in St Louis.

Congrats, you've a won propeller hat from our prize closet....

By the end the O-word was not welcome at 103.3..it was Greatest Hits of 60s, 70s, "and now the 80s". Greater was giving them competition with WROR who then had the format to itself though there was a more rock feel. For now you can dig jockless WODS
Greatest Hits on HD2, web, maybe TuneIn has it etc.
If RKO drops talk maybe they could do a Big 68 revival.AM, yeah, but I'd prefer Turtles and Badfinger to Brother Stair, foreign language or whatever...

You know, this is not as far-fetched as it sounds. Since AM seems to be the domain of the forgotten demo (55+), some of us would welcome a return of The Big 68 if Entercom decides to blow up talk on AM.

I've heard 103.3 HD-2; it's OK but I'd rather have it on the main analog channel, where it belongs, dammit! More often than not an HD-x signal is not there. We need to stop fooling ourselves that HD-2/-3 is a suitable medium for the masses. Unless you live a few miles from the antenna, don't bother to try and pull one of these sub-channels in.
