A day in the life of a lamptimer

Guess Gumpdusky didn't tell Mother Hubbard that Lumberyard 14~Forty went full-time a while back with 52 blazing watts of pow-pow-power. Check out the Hubbard web page for KAZG: http://corporate.hubbardradio.com/markets/phoenix/kazg-1440-am/ YIKES!

Um, maybe this post from October 5 disappeared? http://bit.ly/15NtYLs

Can't believe you missed that, Doc, but I suppose it's possible that Nurse Jeff's eyes have simply stopped gawking after too many hours of enduring the heinous color scheme of this site.

For what it's worth, I received a rejection message-in-a-bottle at my ex-Basha's shopping cart location on the canal, which is why I abandoned it and moved back to the Paddock Pool space (future home of the 11 tower 14~Forty 50 kw array?). The message did not mention that they had hired anyone for the position, just that they had determined that my skills did not match those the gig requires. So my search goes on, and so does the legacy of rudderless Lumberyard 14~Forty. :(

Dr. Akbar:

I had a friend of mine who is a fan of ancient modulation. Before our dinner in Scottsdale, we finally had a chance to drive by Lumberyard 1440. We came right at sunset. The lamptimer seemed to have shut off a bit early, but we thought it was required that the lights were on the tower. Shouldn't the lights on the tower go on, when they shifted to the big 52 watts? They weren't on. However, it was good to see that the lights on the Lumberyard building were on (maybe that meets the FCC requirement). We were also surprised to see that the lumberyard parking lot was full and busy - probably more customers than 1440 had listeners after dark.

Radioresearcher,

The height of the tower falls just short of FCC regulation to require having lights on. Glad you made it out alive -- it is a dangerous, spooky place at night. :)

And catfish (lower case "c") told the Nurse and me that they no longer had to paint the tower of pow-pow-power. That's kinda spooky too, knowing the multiple coats of lead based paint are what holds that thing together! Lumberyard 14~Forty's xmttr site is kinda like the Bermuda Triangle of environmental hazards: asbestos shingled roof; TCB laden power transformers; and a '76 Gremlin parked outside. YIKES!!

Just out of curiosity, what kind of skill set does Mother Hubbard want for Lumberyard 14~Forty employment? Handy with a pick and shovel? Know and speak Hindi? Listen to Culinary Confessions and not gain weight? Figure out why golfers listen to a show about themselves on Ancient Modulation? Memorizing all the words to Bang 545?

They weren't specific about that. I would imagine they need someone with Ancient Modulation engineering experience as they hatch a devious plan to cause mega-interference to all other 1440s worldwide (it is one of the few frequencies used in both 9khz and 10khz spacing schemes, and the skywave at that frequency can be awesome. And all this with the FCC's blessing, apparently. I suppose a guy whose name is "beer" spelled backwards is perfect for the gig. And no, I'm not bitter.

The thought of an 11 tower array on the old Paddock/Round Up Drive In site has Nurse Jeff and me drooling. And yes, the skywave coming off that frequency will be capable of reaching both birthplaces of the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania. Here's a toast to the goldminers of 14~Forty with the finest Pirt Beer for all.

By the way, a toast to the REAL Goldmine, KAZG, in prevailing with the "Goldmine" nickname longer than the southeast valley FM.

You're my first, you're my last, my everything... baby, you're the ginchiest.

We'll drink to that toast, KLL. Two Shirley Temples...stirred, not shaken please.

And the duet featuring Barry White & Edd Byrnes has replaced the canned Xmas music playing in the halls of the Buckeye Media Hut!

Anyone that can say "ginchiest" in a post without smarmy snark is the best.

You are Christmas.

As I was strolling the beaches in the La Jolla/San Diego area last week during one of their 80-degree afternoons, I was working my way through the AM dial...when what to my wondrous ears should appear: worn-out oldies playing on 1440 kHz.

I said to myself, nah, this couldn't be...but then, I was receiving other long distance signals, so after listening for a bit, I heard the world-famous "Arizona Gold" jingle and I knew I had achieved Radio Nirvana: listening live to the Valley Of The Sun's ginchiest station on my own radio! No more recorded airchecks needed. Now I can die in peace!

I must say, the Goldminers were sounding pretty good on AM radio, nice processing for a peashooter (allegedly!) ;) from a lumberyard.

They were fighting it out with KMED talk radio from Medford, Oregon - but KMED could easily be nulled out.

Didn't you mean to say "eight tiny goldminers digging worn-out oldies"?

...but first, get a QSL card from catfish (lower case "c") before checking out. This has to be a record catch for Lumberyard 14~Forty!

It's on! If catfish (lower case "c") can just delay the power change about an hour I can best the La Jolla catch by pulling in the Lumberyard here in lovely Bolinas, CA with my super duper Beverage antenna (Google it). catfish, PM me and let me know when you're going to leave the lamptimer unplugged. With the help of a sudden outage at a certain PG&E substation that serves the KVON-1440 Napa power grid (I know people!), we can do this. It's ON!

Sounds like Possum Lake on the "Red Green Show."

...suspect you're right. Rumor has it next year's biggest budget line item is for duct tape. With Mother Hubbard's connections in the Twin Cities, they'll get a great price from 3M!

OMG...what happened to Radio Sri and all those Bollywood hits that played late afternoons on Lumberyard 14~Forty? Nothin' but wornout oldies in its place now. Khushi-Khushi-YIKES!!

Now we know that "YIKES" translates to "lend me your comb." But is that Urdu or Hindi? I've asked my Rosetta Stone but it continues to display "Ask again later." Just queried it again and it gave that answer 14 times in a row. Help......
