Braves move to Cobb, how does this affect Q100

Ha Ha.......just had to do it. But feel free to post your comments.

I would like to see them stay in ATL, that's all we need a bigger traffic mess at 285/75 at 3:30 in the afternoon. Don't forget they're going to build those toll roads too, Cobb will be jacked up and under construciton for years! Will Q100 survive?

Even as long as 10 years ago, developers figured that "intown" was not the way to go. It seemed to me, all the new construction was out a ways. I think they figured that with all the terrorist threats, possible economic meltdown and rioting, etc. and the fact that our government does not have it together, the major cities would be likely targets. And, hence, they did not want their investments to be destroyed.
Just my thoughts.

As a lifelong (born and raised here) Cobb county resident, I have mixed feelings about this. Obviously, this will be GREAT for our economy, I think I heard the figure of 1600 construction jobs, all the contractors will benefit, and certainly the businesses in the Cumberland/Interstate North area will flourish.

The biggest downside is the impact on traffic. Traffic in that area already sucks. I can see AN106.7 devoting a full time traffic reporter to cover the gridlock that will become the norm on game days. With no real nearby access to light rail, and the CCT transfer station over 2 miles away from the proposed site, where do they plan to park the thousands of cars that will be flooding into the area?

I personally think this is a power play on part of the Braves- though at a press conference today, Mayor Reed made it pretty clear that if the Braves leave, he has a plan to tear down Turner Field and replace it with "middle class" homes. He also said his reasoning for not working harder was because he is not going to commit $220 million public dollars to keeping the team in the city limits.

Which brings me to the third point, as a Cobb homeowner and taxpayer, I do not feel we should foot ANY of the bill. If the Braves want to move here, they need to pay the cost to be the boss. We are ahead of the curve with our taxes (lowest in the area) and I want to keep it that way.

Q100, and all the stations, will have higher listenership in the evening when it takes 2 hours to go through the 75/285 interchange. That's how this will affect Q100.

Do the words "white flight" have any relevance?
Do the words "white flight" have any relevance?

Not really. If you cast about the mid to high bux areas of corncobb county and the others, you find pretty much salt n pepper. It's middle/upper class flight from street crime , high taxes, and poor schools. And the middle/upper class (inset here whatever the P.C. term is for people who aren't caucasian) have no more interest in living amongst the crime and poor education than anyone else.

I understand how you feel. Everytime a new corporate headquarters announcing moving to Georgia, or a new factory announces moving to Georgia, a little digging will show that today's society subsidizes such moves. If your community or your state does not want to play the game, the "business" can go elsewhere. Apparently even business owners who may have a personal philosophy and political position that things shouldn't be this way know that they have to participate in the practice, because they compete with people who do.

So. Why don't you run for the state legislature. Campaign on the promise that you will introduce (and find a way to PASS) a bill that makes it illegal for any form of local government or state government to subsidize the move-in or relocation, or retention of any business enterprise. Go-for-it, Hoss!

Planning a trip out of town, is Atlanta's Hartsfield, Jackson Airport in the City limits of Atlanta? No. The Braves got a good deal (for the club). I just wish there was an improvement in access to the Braves games. It must be a political impossibility to have some form of practical mass transit so one could have a couple of beers at the ballgame and not be in danger on the highways. Turner Field should have been on the rail line.

All that can be fixed. The NEW ball park should be on the rail line. Marietta should be on the rail line. Gwinett and Lawrenceville should be on the rail line. Alpharetta and Cumming should be on the rail line.

Just get it done and we can make everybody happy.

What's a couple of billion dollars amongst friends and neighbors.

Didn't Dallas convert a lot of existing rail to its rapid transit system (DART)?

I'm not exactly a Dallas expert but here is what appears to be the picture:

Some rail has been converted to a style of rail where you don't climb up and down like street cars. Roll your wheel chair right off the platform into the rail car. They use a lot of terminology because they have more than kind of rail system. (light rail and heavy rail). Rail ridership up from 2010 to 2012 81%.

Now here in Georgia we seem to have a lot of mentality that says: "Real men don't ride public transportation!" Dallas is not exactly known as the hometown of WIMPS. Their rail is further expanding in the next two years.

I think they use the term DART to cover their total transportation package much the way Atlanta uses MARTA as an umbrella for both rail and bus.

It looks like SUBURBAN metro Dallas does not shy away from being part of the plan the surburban Metro Atlanta does. And that is a topic that may have a "Come To Jesus Moment" when the Braves settle in at the Cumberland area and our 'gears quit grinding' as far as traffic and moving people goes.

More than you ever wanted to know about Dallas transportation: Wikipedia on Dallas

Thanks for the info. I lived in Dallas in the '80 when there was a lot of talk about DART but the rapid rail part was still in the planning stages.

I really don't think there is going to be that great a traffic problem - not 24/7 anyway. The Braves play about 80 home games (some on weekends), and there is a lot more to do (and more places to eat) at Cumberland than at Cabbagetown, so not everybody will be on the road at the same time. With careful planning (repeat - planning), access to the park should be easier.

Also, it's a win for Atlanta. The city doesn't have to pay for the upkeep but gets to keep the name for the Braves.

(I know things are not that simple - but they are not that complicated, either. Remember - planning!)

Now, to keep this on topic ... it would be nice if the Braves were on a station with a signal that reaches to Cumberland. Where do you think they will be in 2017? How long is AN's contract?

Well the only existing rail that remotely goes near that site is the CSXT W&A main line which is one of the busiest freight rail corridors in the country. Commuter trains will not be running on that line and it doesn't come close enough to the new site anyway. Three major challenges for bringing MARTA up to Cobb:
Cobb doesn't want MARTA.
A new Right of Way would be needed for a rail line running up to Cobb. There's nowhere to run a new ROW unless you're going to straddle I-75.
Cost.

So, the new site will not have rail service.

There was a feature on WSB-TV last night about a company that had been working with The Braves and the City of Atlanta about a new, (lightweight?) mag-lev system that would be built in GA.

They were in hopes of getting a deal to carry people from the MARTA station to Turner Field.

They were asked if they would be making a revised proposal to serve a new Cumberland area field. "We don't know if that is practical. We are looking at it."

Technology is changing. A lot of things are chaning. COBB County has made it clear in the past that they did want MARTA rail.

Who knows what community sentiment will be in the next 5 or 10 years when new technology (and new hiway crowding) is part of the equation.

Other markets smaller than Atlanta are deciding they need rail of some kind. It is no longer 1978. Maybe a new generation in a market that has grown like topsy will have new ideas.

Apparently, you haven't heard any of the plans for SMARTA. I thought everyone had heard about the new technology.

Heres the deal: MARTA is going to extend its North rail almost to Roswell and its West rail to the Chattahoochie River. When you reach the end of the rail line, you transfer to steamboat and paddle to US41 where they are digging an underground railroad to the Cumberland park. :D

Hence the name: SteamboatMARTA. Piece of cake.

And the steamboats stay on the Fulton County side of the Chattahoochie - no cost to Cobb. Win - win...

Gee, we need to get back to radio for a moment. Has anyone ever licensed a standard FM broadcast band station as a 'Mobile Unit'? I'm thinking the Q100... the namesake of this thread, could be mounted on that steamboat cruising up and down the Chattahoochie. Aren't there some generators at the Morgan Falls Dam? They could get this big waterproof extension cord from Home Depot and keep the transmitter plugged at Morgan Falls. I realize the cord would be pretty expensive, but surely Home Depot would buy the naming rights to be displayed on the end of the cable where it plugs into the transmitter up on the steamboard deck.

This whole stadium move has so many money making opportunities and with everyone paying royalties to Cobb County, they can build a rail line all the way up to Talking Rock, my favorite radio licensing point, and still have money left over to pay reverse taxes to Cobb County residents.
